Contents
The Stanley Cup is the most prestigious trophy in all of hockey, and winning it is the ultimate goal for any team. But which team has won it the most?
The Montreal Canadiens
The Montreal Canadiens are a professional ice hockey team based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. They are members of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Canadiens are the oldest professional ice hockey team in the world, and they have won the most Stanley Cups of any team.
The most storied franchise in NHL history
The Montreal Canadiens are the most storied franchise in NHL history. They have won the Stanley Cup a record 24 times and have appeared in the final series 37 times. The Canadiens were founded in 1909 as a charter member of the National Hockey Association (NHA), the predecessor to the National Hockey League (NHL). The team’s first owner was George Kennedy of Montreal, who sold the team to J. Ambrose O’Brien in 1910.
The Canadiens won their first Stanley Cup in 1916, defeating the Portland Rosebuds of the Western Canada Hockey League (WCHL) in a best-of-five series. They repeated as champions in 1917, this time defeating the Seattle Metropolitans of the Pacific Coast Hockey Association (PCHA) in a best-of-seven series. In 1918, with many of their players serving in World War I, the Canadiens defeated Owen Sound of the Ontario Professional Hockey League (OPHL) to win their third Stanley Cup.
After winning another Stanley Cup in 1924, the team went into a slump that saw them miss the playoffs for four straight seasons. They returned to form in 1929, however, when they won their fifth Stanley Cup by defeating the Boston Bruins in a best-of-five series. The team’s fortunes declined again following that victory, and they would not win another Stanley Cup for more than two decades.
The Canadiens finally ended their championship drought in 1953, when they defeated the Bruins once again to win their sixth Stanley Cup. Led by stars such as Maurice “Rocket” Richard and Jean Beliveau, Montreal went on to win four more Stanley Cups over the next decade. The team’s success continued into the 1970s, when they won two more championships.
Since then, though, the Canadiens have been unable to add to their total of 24 Stanley Cups. They have been back to the Finals three times since then but have lost each time: to Philadelphia Flyers in 1974-75 ,the New York Islanders dynasty of 1980-83 , and most recently, Chicago Blackhawks 2010-15 .
