Super Bowl Sunday is upon us yet again! And while we all know that the New England Patriots have the most Super Bowl wins of any team in the NFL, we thought it would be fun to take a look at which teams have the most appearances in the big game.

The New England Patriots

The Bill Walsh era

The Bill Walsh era began in 1979, when Walsh was hired as the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers had only won two games in the previous season, and Walsh turned them into a winning franchise. He led the team to six NFC Championship games and three Super Bowls, winning Super Bowls XVI and XIX.

The Steve Young era

Young was traded to the San Francisco 49ers in 1987 for six draft picks, including two first-rounders, and drafted 16th overall in the first round of the 1987 NFL Draft. He became the back-up of Joe Montana. In his first season, Young appeared in 10 games and started none. The following season, he took over as the starting quarterback after Montana suffered a back injury midseason. Young led the 49ers to a 10–6 win–loss record that earned them a wild card berth in the playoffs where they narrowly defeated the Minnesota Vikings 36-24. In the NFC Divisional Playoff game against the Washington Redskins, he had 325 passing yards and two touchdown passes as the 49ers won 28–10. In the NFC Championship game against the Chicago Bears, he completed 21 out of 37 passes for 277 yards as they won 28–3 to earn a trip to Super Bowl XXIII against their AFC West rivals, Cincinnati Bengals. Young was named as Super Bowl MVP after completing 23 out of 36 passes for a then Super Bowl record 357 passing yards along with two touchdown passes as he led his team to a 20-16 victory. The victory made San Francisco only second team ever (after Green Bay Packers) to win consecutive Super Bowls (Super Bowl XVI & XVII). It was also their fifth Lombardi Trophy overall which is still an NFL record shared with New England Patriots (as of 2019).

The Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys have the most Super Bowls in the NFL with five. The Cowboys have also made it to eight Super Bowls, which is the most of any team in the NFL. The next closest team is the New England Patriots with six.

The Tom Landry era

The Dallas Cowboys are a professional American football team in the National Football League (NFL). They compete in the NFC East division. The team is headquartered in Frisco, Texas, and plays its home games at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, which opened for the 2009 season. The stadium took the place of the now-demolished Texas Stadium, which served as the Cowboys’ home from 1971 through the 2008 season.

They are also tied with the Steelers and San Francisco 49ers for second most Super Bowl wins with five; trailing only the Patriots who have six. With their win against Buffalo Bills on January 31, 1993;Super Bowl XXVIII was their sixth appearance and fourth victory; surpassing both Green Bay and Miami for appearances and tied Dallas with Pittsburgh for victories.[1] In Super Bowl XXX, Dallas defeated Pittsburgh 27–17 to record their fifth win.

The Jimmy Johnson era

The Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League (NFL) have been one of the league’s most successful teams. They have played in eight Super Bowls, tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Denver Broncos for second most appearances, and trail only the New England Patriots for the most appearances by a franchise. The Cowboys have won five Super Bowl titles, tied with their NFC rivals, the San Francisco 49ers; both trailing the Patriots who have six titles to their name.

Barry Switzer led them to their fifth title in Super Bowl XXX during his only season as head coach after Johnson’s resignation in 1994.

In total, 23 Cowboys players have been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, while another 20 have been inducted into the Dallas Cowboys Ring of Honor.

The Brett Favre era

The Brett Favre era began in 1992, when the Packers drafted Favre in the second round of the NFL draft. He took over as the Packers’ starting quarterback in 1994, and led the team to an NFC Championship Game appearance that season. The Packers returned to the NFC Championship Game in 1996, but lost to the eventual Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos. In 1997, the Packers again advanced to the NFC title game, but this time they were victorious, defeating the San Francisco 49ers to advance to Super Bowl XXXII. The Packers then lost Super Bowl XXXII to the John Elway-led Denver Broncos team.
