The answer to this question may surprise you. The NFL head coach with the most wins is actually tied between two men: Don Shula and George Halas.
Bill Belichick- New England Patriots
With 253 total wins, Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots has the most wins of any head coach in NFL history. Belichick has coached the Patriots since 2000, and has won six Super Bowls with the team. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest coaches of all time.
Don Shula- Miami Dolphins
Don Shula was the head coach of the Miami Dolphins for 26 seasons, from 1970 to 1995. During that time, he amassed a record of 347-173-6, for a winning percentage of .668. He is the only head coach in NFL history to lead his team to a perfect season, and he did it twice (1972 and 1973). Shula also led the Dolphins to three Super Bowl appearances, winning two of them (Super Bowls VII and VIII).
Tom Landry- Dallas Cowboys
Tom Landry ranks first in most wins by an NFL head coach. He coached the Dallas Cowboys for 29 seasons, from 1960 to 1988, compiling a 270–178–6 record.
Chuck Noll- Pittsburgh Steelers
With 209 career regular season victories, Chuck Noll is the winningest head coach in Pittsburgh Steelers history. He led the team to four Super Bowl victories in the 1970s, a decade in which the Steelers became the first team to win four titles.
George Halas- Chicago Bears
George Halas is the winningest head coach in NFL history. He coached the Chicago Bears for 40 seasons, from 1920 to 1967. Halas won 318 games, lost 148 and tied 8. He also had 6 ties in seasons where there were fewer than 14 games played. Halas’ winning percentage of .682 is the best in NFL history for a coach with at least 200 wins.
Bill Walsh- San Francisco 49ers
In ten seasons as the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, Bill Walsh won 102 games, including playoffs. He also won six division titles and three Super Bowls.
Joe Gibbs- Washington Redskins
Joe Gibbs has the most wins as an NFL head coach, with a regular season record of 154-94. He led the Washington Redskins to 3 Super Bowl titles, and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1996.
Tony Dungy- Indianapolis Colts
Tony Dungy holds the record for the most wins by a head coach in the NFL. He coached the Indianapolis Colts to a Super Bowl victory in 2007. He also led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a Super Bowl win in 2002.
Marv Levy- Buffalo Bills
When it comes to NFL head coaches, Marv Levy is in a league of his own. The Buffalo Bills head coach racked up an impressive 154-120-0 record over his 25 seasons with the team, including four consecutive trips to the Super Bowl from 1991 to 1994. Unfortunately for Levy, the Bills came up short each time, but his legacy as one of the greatest coaches in NFL history is undeniable.
Jimmy Johnson- Dallas Cowboys
Jimmy Johnson was the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys from 1989 to 1993. He led the team to two Super Bowl wins, in Super Bowl XXVII and Super Bowl XXVIII. He also coached the Miami Dolphins from 1996 to 1999.
