Most WWE World Heavyweight Championships

The WWE World Heavyweight Championship is a professional wrestling world heavyweight championship created and promoted by the American professional wrestling promotion WWE on the SmackDown brand. It is one of two world titles in the WWE, alongside the WWE Universal Championship that was created for the Raw brand as a result of the 2016 WWE draft. The current holder is AJ Styles, who is in his second reign.

Inaugural champion Triple H vacated the title on August 8, 2002, due to injury; he then won the title for a record eighth time at SummerSlam on August 17. Unknown to then-General Manager Stephanie McMahon, her husband and champion Triple H had secretly married McMahon in Las Vegas three days prior to SummerSlam. As a result, then-SmackDown! general manager Kurt Angle made an impromptu match for the title between The Rock and The Undertaker with himself as special guest referee, which The Rock won after interference from Brock Lesnar.

Lesnar became champion at Unforgiven on September 22, defeating Angle and The Rock in a triple threat match; he successfully defended it against Eddie Guerrero at No Mercy later that month before losing it to Big Show at Survivor Series later that year. Guerrero won his first world title by defeating Lesnar and Show in a triple threat match at No Way Out early the following year. Guerrero successfully defended it against Matt Hardy (who won an impromptu Money in the Bank Ladder Match earlier that night) at WrestleMania 21 in April 2005 before losing it to John “Bradshaw” Layfield (JBL) later that month during Judgment Day due to outside interference from Muhammad Hassan; this made JBL a five-time champion, breaking Triple H’s record of four reigns. Following his loss of the title, Guerrero left WWE due to apparent creative differences with management and returned to wrestling on the independent circuit over one year later. Rey Mysterio then defeated JBL at The Great American Bash on July 24 to win his first world title, beginning Mysterio’s second reign as champion; after suffering a severe injury during his victory celebration following Bash which caused him to vacate both titles (the other being ECW Championship), Mr. Kennedy cashed in his Money in the Bank contract later that night and defeated Batista via knockout with assistance from Edge (who had Edgecuted Batista through two announce tables with two steel chairs earlier) to become Mr. Kennedy’s first world heavyweight champion). At No Mercy 2007 two months later however, Edge defeated Kennedy via pinfall after performing two consecutive spears on him (the first was botched earlier as Edge accidentally leapt onto Kennedy instead of through him).

Edge then held onto the championship until winning it back from Mysterio following Armageddon 2008 via pinfall after hitting him with a steel chair while Mysterio was suspended upside down in 619 position; this marked Edge’s seventh reign as champion and made him only second superstar behind Triple H to win the title seven times or more (Triple H would eventually win it for an eighth time less than one month later). Two weeks later on SmackDown!, Jeff Hardy won an Elimination Chamber match at No Way Out 2009 for a SmackDown! brand championship opportunity at WrestleMania 25 where he unsuccessfully challenged Edge for his title; Hardy earned another opportunity when he again defeated Edge (this time via pinfall after hitting him with a Con-Chair-To while wearingwireless exacto knives strapped to both of his wrists) less than one month later during Backlash 2009 after multipleInterference from Matt Hardy (Jeff’s real life brother).
