The title was established under WWE’s then-current developmental territory World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in 1963 as the WWWF World Heavyweight Championship, with Buddy Rogers becoming the inaugural champion. It became known as the WWF Heavyweight Championship after Rogers won its predecessor,

the WCW World Heavyweight Championship following Vince McMahon’s purchase of WCW, it became referred to by fans as “World Heavyweight” or “WHC” until 2008 when McMahon announced that only one world heavyweight championship would be active within their organization; thus renaming it to “WWE Championship”, which brought about a unified branding of their product under one name: “WWE”.
