The Hawks have won four conference titles (1957, 1958, 1960, 1961) and one NBA title (1958). The franchise has recorded three “trades” in its history. The Hawks began play as the expanding Tri-Cities Blackhawks based in Moline, Illinois, in 1949. In 1951, the franchise was renamed the Milwaukee Hawks after a brief stint in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. When they became too costly to maintain after a move back to Moline, they were moved to St. Louis instead of being sold outright. At that time they were renamed the St. Louis Hawks and remained until 1968 when they finally settled in Atlanta as part of Ted Turner’s purchase of the franchise via his Turner Broadcasting Company conglomerate.
Since relocating to Atlanta in 1968, the franchise has reached the playoffs 29 times (including 2020), posted a winning record 23 times and has advanced to nine NBA Finals appearances (1957, 1958, 1960–1961, 1962–1963 and 1965), winning one championship in 1958. The team made one appearance during the NBA Playoffs prior to moving to Atlanta: it reached the Western Conference Finals where it lost to Minneapolis in seven games during their inaugural season while still based out of Tri-Cities after having relocated from Milwaukee that offseason; this would be their final appearance until moving south seven years later when they finally reached championship level play for themselves for five consecutive seasons behind star player Bob Pettit who would win Most Valuable Player honors four times during those five seasons en route to capturing their single championship title before losing out to eventual champion Boston Celtics led by Bill Russell during his prime throughout most of that decade while also capturing 11 championships himself over that span including an incredible eight straight from 1959-1966 which is still an NBA record today while playing alongside fellow Hall of Famer Bob Cousy throughout all those championship runs which came at Pettit’s expense as Cousy’s Celtics prevented him from ever winning another title after 1963 despite being perennial All-Star caliber players throughout their careers as well being inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame together coincidentally enough in 1971 just two years after Pettit’s retirement due largely in part to injuries suffered later on near the end of his career..
