We take a look at who has won the tennis grand slam, and what it takes to be a champion.
The Grand Slam
The Grand Slam is a term used to describe the four major tennis tournaments-the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open. Winning all four of these competitions in a single calendar year is a rare feat, and it has only been accomplished by a few players in the history of tennis.
What is the Grand Slam?
Winning all four major tennis tournaments in a single calendar year is called a Grand Slam. The four tournaments are the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open. If a player wins all four of these tournaments in the same year, it is considered one of the greatest accomplishments in tennis. Although it has only been done a handful of times, it is still one of the ultimate goals for any professional tennis player.
The first person to accomplish this feat was American Margaret Court, who did it in 1970. She won all four majors that year, as well as the women’s doubles at Wimbledon and the mixed doubles at the US Open. German player Steffi Graf is the only other woman to have won a true Grand Slam, doing so in 1988. She won all four majors that year, as well as the Olympic gold medal in tennis.
In men’s tennis, there have been three players who have achieved this feat: Australian Don Budge in 1938, American Rod Laver in 1969 and Swiss star Roger Federer in 2009. All three men won all four majors that year, as well as an Olympic gold medal (Budge in 1936 and Laver in 1960).
While winning all four majors in a single year is an amazing accomplishment, some players have come close but fallen just short. One such player is American Jimmy Connors, who won three majors in 1974 (the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open) but lost at the French Open to Argentine Guillermo Vilas.
