Who Is 1st in the Eastern Conference?
Contents
The Eastern Conference is currently led by the Milwaukee Bucks, who are 1st in the conference with a record of 53-12. The Toronto Raptors are 2nd with a 50-17 record, while the Philadelphia 76ers are 3rd with a 47-21 record.
The Teams
The conference has been led by the Toronto Raptors and the Boston Celtics. The two teams have been the class of the conference for the past few years. The Raptors are the defending champions, and the Celtics have the best record in the conference.
Cleveland Cavaliers
The Cleveland Cavaliers, also known as the Cavs, are an American professional basketball team based in Cleveland, Ohio. The Cavs compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Eastern Conference Central Division. The team began play as an expansion team in 1970, along with the Portland Trail Blazers and Buffalo Braves. Home games were first held at Cleveland Arena from 1970 to 1974, followed by the Richfield Coliseum from 1974 to 1994. Since 1994, the Cavs have played their home games at Quicken Loans Arena, which they share with the arena’s primary tenant, the Cleveland Monsters of the American Hockey League. Dan Gilbert has owned the Cavaliers franchise since March 2005.
The Cavaliers opened their inaugural season losing their first 15 games and struggled in their early years, placing no better than 6th in the Eastern Conference during their first five seasons. The team won their first Central Division title in 1976, which also marked their first playoff appearance in franchise history, where they advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals. The Cavaliers again advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2009. Between 2010 and 2014, however, they failed to make any significant progress, and currently hold neither a division title nor a conference title. As a result, losing LeBron James in 2010 caused them to rebuild completely; James returned to lead them to eight straight conference playoff appearances from 2015 until his second departure in 2018.
Toronto Raptors
As of January 8th, 2020, the Toronto Raptors are first in the Eastern Conference with a record of 24-11. The Raptors are looking to make the playoffs for the fifth straight year.

What’s Left in the Season
With only a few weeks left in the regular NBA season, the playoff picture is starting to come into focus. In the Eastern Conference, the Milwaukee Bucks have clinched the top seed and home-court advantage throughout the conference playoffs. The Toronto Raptors, Indiana Pacers and Philadelphia 76ers have also clinched playoff spots, but they are still jockeying for position. The Boston Celtics and Brooklyn Nets are currently tied for seventh place and the final spot in the playoffs.
In the Western Conference, the Golden State Warriors have clinched the top seed and home-court advantage throughout the conference playoffs. The Denver Nuggets, Portland Trail Blazers, Houston Rockets and Oklahoma City Thunder have also clinched playoff spots, but they are still jockeying for position. The Utah Jazz, San Antonio Spurs, Los Angeles Clippers and Sacramento Kings are currently fighting for the final spot in the playoffs.
The regular season will end on April 10th and the playoffs will begin on April 13th.
The Predictions
Although the season has just begun, many people have already made predictions about which team will come out on top in the Eastern Conference. Some say it will be the Toronto Raptors, while others think it will be the Philadelphia 76ers. So, who is really 1st in the Eastern Conference?
Based on the Rest of the Season
The Toronto Raptors are currently in first place in the Eastern Conference with a record of 48-17. They are 3.5 games ahead of the Boston Celtics, who are in second place with a record of 44-20. The Raptors have 23 games remaining in the regular season, while the Celtics have 20 games remaining.
Assuming that each team wins the same percentage of their remaining games as they have so far this season, the Raptors would finish the regular season with a record of 53-20, and the Celtics would finish with a record of 49-21. This would give the Raptors a 4.5 game lead over the Celtics heading into the playoffs.
The top seed in the Eastern Conference has gone on to reach the NBA Finals in nine of the last ten seasons. The only team to buck that trend was the 2014-15 Atlanta Hawks, who lost in the Eastern Conference Finals to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
