He joined the Cowboys in 1960, when they were an expansion team, and led them to their first winning season in only their third year of existence. From 1966 to 1985, Landry’s Cowboys won 20 or more games eight times and made it to the playoffs 14 times. They appeared in five Super Bowls, winning two of them.

Landry was known for his stoic exterior and calm demeanor on the sidelines. He was also a master motivator, able to get the most out of his players. Many of his former players have gone on to successful careers in coaching and broadcasting, including Hall of Famers Mike Ditka and Roger Staubach.

After being fired by new Cowboys owner Jerry Jones following the 1988 season, Landry took a year off before returning to coaching as head coach of the fledgling Arizona Cardinals franchise in 1989. He coached the Cardinals for three seasons before retiring from coaching for good in 1992.
