The WWE Championship is a world heavyweight championship created and promoted by the American professional wrestling promotion WWE on the SmackDown brand.

The title is one of WWE’s original championships, dating back to 1963. It has been referred to as the “WWE World Heavyweight Championship” and the “WWE Universal Championship”, while it has also been introduced under various other names, including being unified with the World Heavyweight Championship and therefore known as the “Unified WWE World Heavyweight Championship”. The current champion is Drew McIntyre, who is in his first reign.

The championship was first awarded to Buddy Rogers after he defeated Antonino Rocca in the inaugural match on April 25, 1963. The title chronology is as follows (per Rule of Three). WWE recognizes Rocca as the inaugural champion and credits Rogers with being the first official champion, with a reign lasting 27 days. When the WWF split from the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) in 1983 and became its own promotion, it reactivated its NWA membership and recognized NWA World Heavyweight Champion Harley Race as its world champion; however, other former NWA promotions such as Jim Crockett Promotions (JCP) and World Class Championship Wrestling (WCCW) continued to recognize their own separate world heavyweight champions. In 1988, when JCP ceased promoting its NWA World Heavyweight Championship after buying out WCCW, then-JCP owner Jim Crockett Jr. ceded recognition of that title’s lineage to then-NWA President Pat O’Connor at Starrcade in exchange for O’Connor awarding WCCW’s Lone Star title to JCP’s Ric Flair as a newly created world heavyweight championship under NWA sanctioning; Flair thus became not only a dual champion but also recognized by both Crockett and McMahon—although only McMahon officially recognized Flair in his capacity as NWA Champion.

In 1991, The Ultimate Warrior defeated Hulk Hogan at SummerSlam to win his second WWE Championship after previously holding the Intercontinental Championship, making him the only person at that time to have held both titles concurrently. Hogan won back the title from Warrior at WrestleMania IX; however Warrior was crowned undisputed champion by WWF President Jack Tunney as he had pinned both Randy Savage and Ric Flair during the match while Hogan was pinned by Flair. This led to a rematch between Warrior and Hogan at SummerSlam in 1992 where Warrior regained both titles making him once again a dual champion after vacating the Intercontinental Title due to then new WWF policy forbidding wrestlers from holding multiple championships simultaneously although this policy would later be relaxed on occasion

In late 1993, Bret Hart defeated Yokozuna at Survivor Series to win his first WWE Championship and vacate his WWF Intercontinental Championship due to new WWF policy which once again forbade wrestlers from holding multiple championships simultaneously although this policy would later be relaxed on occasion. At WrestleMania X, Hart successfully defended his WWE Title against longtime rival Owen Hart. In May 1996 during Canadian Stampede pay-per-view event in Calgary Alberta Bret “The Hitman” Hart won a 10-man tag team match involving some of wrestling’s top stars of past vs present which saw him team with longtime friends Davey Boy Smith & Jim Neidhart (known collectively as The British Bulldog & Anvil) plus Lex Luger & Stone Cold Steve Austin defeating Shawn Michaels team consisting of Yokozuna & Hunter Hearst Helmsley (later known simply as Triple H) plus Crush & Goldust this event was held in Bret Harts home town in front of over 65 thousand fans many of them were wearing pink & black sporting Bret “The Hitman” Harts trademark colours

The history of the WWE Championship

The WWE Championship is a world heavyweight championship created and promoted by the American professional wrestling promotion WWE, currently defended on their Raw brand. It is one of WWE’s original championships, dating back to 1963.

The WWE Championship was first introduced in 1963 as the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF) World Heavyweight Championship.

In 1963, the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF) World Heavyweight Championship was introduced. The first champion was “Nature Boy” Buddy Rogers, who had defeated Antonino Rocca in the finals of a tournament held to crown a new champion following the retirement ofthen-champion Bruno Sammartino.

Over the next few years, the championship changed hands several times, with such names as “Classy” Freddie Blassie, Gorilla Monsoon, and Pedro Morales holding the title. In 1971, WWE Hall of Famer “Superstar” Billy Graham became champion and held it for nearly two years.

In January 1972, Sammartino regained the championship for the second time by defeating Graham in Madison Square Garden. Sammartino would go on to hold the title for an unprecedented seven years before finally losing it to “The Living Legend” Bruno Sammartino in April 1979.

Since then, there have been a number of different WWE Champions, with such notable names as Hulk Hogan, Bret “Hit Man” Hart, Shawn Michaels, Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, Triple H, and John Cena all holding the prestigous title at one time or another.

The title was created after the then-WWWF World Heavyweight Champion Bruno Sammartino refused to defend the title against challenger “Nature Boy” Buddy Rogers.

In order to provide an undisputed champion, WWE (then the WWWF) owner Vince McMahon Sr. created a new world title known as the WWE Championship. This decision was made after Bruno Sammartino refused to defend his WWWF World Heavyweight Championship against “Nature Boy” Buddy Rogers. Sammartino was scheduled to face Rogers at Madison Square Garden on January 24, 1963, but he backed out of the match due to injuries he had sustained in a car accident. McMahon then created the new championship and awarded it to Rogers as the first champion.

The title was referred to as the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF) World Heavyweight Championship until May 11, 1971, when the company changed its name to World Wrestling Federation (WWF). The title was then renamed WWF World Heavyweight Championship and remained so until December 26, 1978, when it was renamed back to WWWF World Heavyweight Championship following a tournament in Tokyo, Japan. The title was once again renamed WWE World Heavyweight Championship on July 1, 2002 when WWE Undisputed Champion Brock Lesnar defeated The Rock in the main event of WrestleMania X8 to unify both titles. The title remained unified until June 6, 2005 when then-WWE Champion John “Bradshaw” Layfield (JBL) defeated SmackDown! GM Theodore Long in a steel cage match on SmackDown!, thereby stripping Batista of his title and re-establishing a separate world heavyweight championship for SmackDown!. On October 20, 2013 at Hell in a Cell, Randy Orton defeated Daniel Bryan in controversial fashion to become the new WWE Champion; however due Satan’s interference which resulted in Bryan’s head being lowered through the cage and being unable to prevent Orton from escaping
the structure while still holding onto Bryan’s foot. As a result of the match’s conclusion, then-WWE COO Triple H declared that both men were still co-champions and announced that there would be a rematch between them at Survivor Series with both men’s careers on the line. At Survivor Series, Bryan regained sole possession of the title after defeating Orton inside Hell in a Cell to end their feud.

Sammartino eventually regained the title in a rematch with Rogers.

Sammartino eventually regained the title in a rematch with Rogers at Shea Stadium on June 30, 1963, which is to date the longest WWE Championship reign in history. From that point on, Sammartino would be considered the Greatest WWE Champion of All Time. After losing the title to Ivan Koloff on January 18, 1971, Sammartino remained with WWE for several more years before finally leaving in 1988.
