It’s that time of year again! The NFL playoffs are upon us and everyone is wondering who is going to make it to the big game.

AFC

The American Football Conference (AFC) is one of the two conferences of the National Football League (NFL), the highest professional level of American football in the world.

New England Patriots

The New England Patriots are a professional American football team based in the Greater Boston area. The Patriots compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) East division. The team plays its home games at Gillette Stadium in the town of Foxborough, Massachusetts, which is located 28 miles (45 km) southwest of downtown Boston.

The Patriots are also headquartered at Gillette Stadium. An original member of the American Football League (AFL), the Patriots joined the NFL in the 1970 merger of the two leagues. The team changed its name from the original Boston Patriots after relocating to Foxborough in 1971. The Patriots played their home games at Foxboro Stadium from 1971 to 2001, then moved to Gillette Stadium at the start of 2002.

Pittsburgh Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers are a professional American football team based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Steelers compete in the National Football League (NFL), as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) North division. The team plays its home games at Heinz Field on Pittsburgh’s South Side in the North Shore neighborhood, which also hosts the University of Pittsburgh Panthers. The Steelers have won more Super Bowl titles than any other franchise with six and are tied with the New England Patriots for the most AFC championships with nine. The franchise has recorded more wins than any other team in NFL history.

Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jaguars have clinched the AFC South title and are in the playoffs for the first time since 2007. They will host a playoff game at EverBank Field for the first time since 1999.

Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs are a professional American football team based in Kansas City, Missouri. The Chiefs compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) West division. The team was founded in 1960 as the Dallas Texans by businessman Lamar Hunt and was a charter member of the American Football League (AFL). In 1963, the team relocated to Kansas City and assumed their current name. The Chiefs joined the NFL as a result of the merger in 1970. The team is valued at over $2 billion.

NFC

The NFC playoff field is set with the Seahawks, Packers, Cowboys, and Bears all clinching division titles and the Rams and Saints earning wild card spots. Who will represent the conference in the Super Bowl?

Los Angeles Rams

The Los Angeles Rams are a professional American football team that competes in the National Football League (NFL). The Rams franchise was founded in 1936 as the Cleveland Rams in the short-lived second American Football League (AFL) before joining the NFL the next year. In 1946, the franchise moved to Los Angeles. The Rams franchise remained in the metro area until 1994, when they moved to St. Louis. The Rams franchise returned to Los Angeles in 2016.

The Rams organization has won three NFL championships, and is the only one to win championships representing three different cities (Cleveland in 1945, Los Angeles in 1951, and St. Louis in 1999). They are also the only team to win two consecutive NFL championships in two different cities, having done so first in Cleveland (1945) and then again seventy years later when they won Super Bowl LIII representing Los Angeles (2018).

The Rams have made 19 trips to the playoffs, including nine times winning their divisional championship and six times as a wild card team. They have appeared in three Super Bowls, winning Super Bowl XXXIV in Atlanta.

New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints are a professional American football team based in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Saints currently compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) South division. The team was founded by John W. Mecom Jr., David Dixon, and the city of New Orleans on November 1, 1966. The Saints began play in Tulane Stadium in 1967.

The name “Saints” is an allusion to November 1 being All Saints Day in the Catholic faith, as New Orleans has a large Catholic population. Due to the construction of the Superdome and Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the Saints were forced to play their home games elsewhere for a time; first at LSU’s Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, then at Tulane’s Yulman Stadium on the campus of Tulane University.

Minnesota Vikings

As the NFC’s No. 6 seed, the Minnesota Vikings will travel to play the New Orleans Saints in the Wild Card round. The Vikings finished the regular season 10-6, but lost out on the NFC North title to the Green Bay Packers (11-5) on a tiebreaker.

The Vikings are led by quarterback Kirk Cousins, who threw for 3,603 yards and 26 touchdowns this season. Cousins was sacked just 21 times this season, thanks in part to a strong offensive line that includes Pro Bowlers Riley Reiff and Dalvin Cook.

On defense, the Vikings are one of the best teams in the NFL. They finished second in the league in points allowed (18.9 per game) and first in yards allowed (306.5 per game). Linval Joseph and Harrison Smith are two of the best players in the league at their respective positions (defensive tackle and safety), and rookie linebacker Eric Kendricks had a breakout year with 105 tackles.

Philadelphia Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles are a professional American football franchise based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Eagles compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) East division. In the 2017 season, the Eagles won Super Bowl LII, their first Super Bowl win in franchise history and their first NFL title since 1960.
