Contents
It’s that time of year again! The NBA Finals are just around the corner, and everyone is wondering who is going to take home the championship this year. We’ve got a breakdown of the contenders, and our predictions for who is going to come out on top.
The teams
The Golden State Warriors
If you ask anyone who the favorites are to win the NBA Finals, most would say the Golden State Warriors. The Warriors have been to the Finals five straight times and have won three of those. They have a core of All-Stars in Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green, as well as a great supporting cast. The Warriors also have one of the best coaches in Steve Kerr. They are the clear favorites to win it all again.
The Cleveland Cavaliers
The Cleveland Cavaliers are an American professional basketball team based in Cleveland, Ohio. The Cavaliers compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Eastern Conference Central Division. The team began play as an expansion team in 1970, along with the Portland Trail Blazers and Buffalo Braves. Home games were first held at Cleveland Arena from 1970 to 1974, followed by the Richfield Coliseum from 1974 to 1994. Since 1994, the Cavaliers have played their home games at Quicken Loans Arena in downtown Cleveland.
The Cavaliers have featured many star players throughout their history, including draft picks Austin Carr, Brad Daugherty, Zydrunas Ilgauskas, LeBron James, and Kyrie Irving. All-time franchise leaders include John Lucas III (points), Luther Head (three-point field goals), Bingo Smith (rebounds), Nate Thurmond (total rebounds), Mark Price (assists), Žydrūnas Ilgauskās (blocked shots leader), and Steve Kerr (steals). Past NBA head coaches of the Cavaliers include Chuck Daly, Lenny Wilkens, Mike Fratello and Byron Scott. In 2016, Billups was named by Dan GilbertOwner Dan Gilbert to serve as Vice Chairman and Alternate Governor alongside him.
The players
Steph Curry
As the reigning NBA MVP, Steph Curry is one of the most electrifying players in the league. A true sharpshooter, Curry can score from anywhere on the court, making him a constant threat to opponents. Blessed with incredible handles and vision, Curry is also an excellent playmaker, often finding open teammates for easy baskets. On the defensive end, he is not the biggest or strongest player, but his quickness and instincts make him a very difficult player to score against. In short, Curry is one of the most complete players in the NBA, and he will be a huge factor in deciding who wins the NBA Finals.
LeBron James
LeBron James is an American professional basketball player who is widely considered to be one of the greatest players of all time. He has played for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, and Los Angeles Lakers. James is a four-time NBA champion, two-time NBA Finals MVP, and two-time Olympic gold medalist. He has also been named the NBA MVP four times and the NBA Finals MVP three times.
The match-ups
The Warriors’ offense vs. the Cavaliers’ defense
The Warriors finished the regular season with the best record in the NBA, and they did it largely on the strength of their offense. They scored 115 points per 100 possessions, which was miles better than any other team in the league. They’re an excellent shooting team, they take care of the ball, and they have perhaps the bestcollection of shooters in the league. When they’re hitting their threes, they’re basically unguardable.
The Cavaliers, on the other hand, were a middle-of-the-pack offensive team during the regular season. They scored 107 points per 100 possessions, which was only good for 11th in the league. But they have a tendency to turn it up a notch in the playoffs, and they’ve been especially good in this year’s postseason. They’re averaging 111 points per 100 possessions in the playoffs, which is better than all but two teams.
The big question in this series is whether or not the Cavaliers’ defense can slow down the Warriors’ offense. The Cavaliers were actually a pretty good defensive team during the regular season, finishing fifth in defensive efficiency. But they haven’t been quite as good in the playoffs. They’re still a top-10 defense in these playoffs, but they haven’t been able to slow down some of the better offenses they’ve faced.
And make no mistake: The Warriors’ offense is one of the best we’ve seen in recent years. It will be a tough task for any defense to slow them down, let alone one that hasn’t been playing its best basketball of late.
The Cavaliers’ offense vs. the Warriors’ defense
The Cavaliers’ offense is really good. They have the best player in the world in LeBron James, and they have two other guys who can score 20 points on any given night in Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love. The Warriors’ defense is also really good. They have the two-time reigning Defensive Player of the Year in Draymond Green, and they have two other guys who are really good at guarding the perimeter in Klay Thompson and Andre Iguodala.
The Cavaliers are going to have to score a lot of points to win this series, and the Warriors are going to have to stop them from scoring a lot of points. It’s going to be a battle of offense vs. defense, and it’s going to be a lot of fun to watch.
The predictions
The Warriors are the favorites to win the NBA Finals. They have been to the Finals five straight times and have won three championships in that span. The Raptors are the underdogs, but they have proved doubters wrong before. They have all the tools to make a run at the title. Let’s see who the experts are picking to win the Finals.
The Warriors will win in 6 games
The Warriors will win in 6 games. They have the better team, and they are playing at home. Kevin Durant will be the MVP.
The Cavaliers will win in 7 games
The Eastern Conference Finals between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Boston Celtics has been a hotly contested match up. The Cavaliers have had their ups and downs throughout the series, but they have proven time and time again that they are the better team. With LeBron James leading the way, the Cavaliers will take down the Celtics in seven games to advance to the NBA Finals.
In the Finals, they will face off against either the Golden State Warriors or the Houston Rockets. These two teams have been dominating all season long, but the Warriors seem to have an edge. They have home court advantage and they are coming into the series with more rest than the Rockets. However, with James Harden leading the way, the Rockets are not to be counted out.
This series is going to be a close one, but in seven games, the Cavaliers will come out on top and win their second NBA championship in three years.
