Since 1991, the team has played its home games at Vivint Smart Home Arena. The franchise began play as an expansion team in 1974 as the New Orleans Jazz. The Jazz were one of the least successful teams in the league in their early years. In 1985, they traded star player Adrian Dantley to the Detroit Pistons for Mark Aguirre, and things slowly started to turn around.

In 1988, they picked up John Stockton and Karl Malone; between them, Stockton and Malone spent more than 20 seasons with the Jazz and are considered among the best point guard–power forward duos of all time. They also picked up Jeff Hornacek during that time; he would go on to have a successful career with them as well. In 1996, after losing Stockton and Malone to free agency, they rebuilt around rookie point guard Daron Williams and eventually returned to prominence by 2005 when they reacquired Malone currently; They have made the playoffs every year from 2005 to 2019 except one. They ranked first in defensively efficiency during that time frame; Williams went on to be co-runner up for Rookie of The Year that season. With Hall of Fame head coach Jerry Sloan at the helm for 23 seasons from 1988 to 2011, they became one of only six NBA franchises with 1,000 wins during that time period; this included two trips to conference finals in 1997 and 1998 where they narrowly missed out on qualifying for NBA Finals both times. After Sloan left late in 2010/11 season, Tyrone Corbin became head coach but was let go halfway through his fourth season when the franchise once again failed to make playoffs.

Quin Snyder was then hired prior to 2014–15 season whereupon he led Jazz to three consecutive playoff berths including a conference semifinal appearance in 2017 where they narrowly lost 4–3 series against eventual NBA runner-up Golden State Warriors despite being down 0–3 in series at one point; This was followed by another conference semifinal appearance under Snyder in 2018 where they lost 4–2 against Houston Rockets
