The 2021 NHL playoffs are finally here after a long and strange regular season.

Who is in the playoffs?

As the NHL’s 2020-21 regular season winds down, the playoff picture is starting to take shape.

The great unknown heading into the season was how COVID-19 would affect the schedule and which teams would be able to field a competitive roster. But now, with a 56-game schedule in the books, we know which 16 teams will be headed to the playoffs.

There are still some questions to be answered, such as who will win the Presidents’ Trophy for having the best record in the regular season. But for now, let’s take a look at which teams have clinched a spot in the 2021 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Eastern Conference
1. Florida Panthers – The Panthers have been one of the biggest surprises of the season and they’ve clinched their first division title since 2011-12. They’re also in contention for the Presidents’ Trophy with just two games remaining.
2. Washington Capitals – The defending Stanley Cup champions are back in the playoffs after missing out last season. They’ve clinched their fifth consecutive Metropolitan Division title and are in contention for the Presidents’ Trophy.
3. Pittsburgh Penguins – The penguins are back in the playoffs for a 13th consecutive season, which is tied for the longest active streak in NHL history ( Blackhawks). They’ve clinched their ninth consecutive playoff berth and are currently second in the Metropolitan Division behind Washington .
4. New York Islanders – The Islanders have clinched their fourth consecutive playoff berth and sixth in seven seasons. They’re currently third in the Metropolitan Division but could still finish as high as second if they can leapfrog Pittsburgh .
5. Boston Bruins – The Bruins have clinched their third straight playoff berth and sixth in seven seasons. They currently sit atop the MassMutual East Division but could still finish second if they lose their final two games and Florida wins its final two games .

How did they make it?

The Carolina Hurricanes were the last team to clinch a playoff berth, doing so on the final day of the regular season. Here’s a look at how each of the 16 playoff teams got here:

Boston Bruins (155 points, second in NHL)
-Led the NHL in wins (36) and points (78) during the regular season
-Won Presidents’ Trophy for second time in three seasons
-Have won 14 straight games against Buffalo dating back to December 2019
-David Pastrnak led NHL with 48 goals; Brad Marchand was top 10 in both assists (47) and points (68)

Washington Capitals (154 points, third in NHL)
-Back-to-back Metropolitan Division champions
-Backstopped by Vezina Trophy finalist Vitek Vanecek (.917 save percentage, 2.69 GAA); he is 15th in league history among goaltenders to make their playoff debut with at least five starts
-Alex Ovechkin scored team-leading 24 goals; John Carlson led defensemen with 46 assists and 60 points

Florida Panthers (162 points, first in Central Division)
-Capture first division title since winning Southeast Division in 2012
–Won 20 straight games between Feb. 20 and April 18; longest winning streak in franchise history and tied for longest winning streak by any team since 1993-94 campaign
–Captain Aleksander Barkov led club with 62 assists and 95 points; Rookie of the Year finalist Carter Verhaeghe had team best 34 goals

What is the schedule?

The 2021 NHL playoffs are scheduled to begin on May 15, 2021, and will end no later than July 9, with the Stanley Cup Finals slated for July 19–23. The tournament will involve 16 teams in a traditional playoff format, with four rounds of best-of-seven series leading up to the Stanley Cup Finals.
