Who Is In The Playoffs For Baseball?

American League

The American League playoff field is set. The Tampa Bay Rays, Oakland Athletics, Minnesota Twins, and Houston Astros will compete in the AL Wild Card Game. The Cleveland Indians, New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, and the defending World Series champion Houston Astros will have the home-field advantage in the ALDS.

New York Yankees

The New York Yankees are an American professional baseball team based in the Bronx, New York City. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. They are one of two major league clubs based in New York City, the other being the National League’s (NL) New York Mets. The Yankees began play in the 1901 season as the Baltimore Orioles (no relation to the modern Baltimore Orioles). In 1903, Frank Farrell and Bill Devery purchased the franchise after it ceased operations and moved it to New York City. The team’s name was changed to the New York Highlanders in 1913, then to the Yankees in 1913.

Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox are an American professional baseball team based in Boston, Massachusetts. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. The Red Sox are one of the oldest Major League Baseball teams and claim eight World Series championships, tied for third-most of any MLB team and fourth-most of any team in the Major Leagues. The origins of the name “Red Sox” first appeared in print on April 22, 1908, in a game report in the Boston Herald.

Founded in 1901 as one of the American League’s eight charter franchises, Fenway Park has been home to the Red Sox since 1912. The Red Sox have won seven World Series championships and nine AL pennants, while qualifying to play in 14 AL playoffs and four AL Wild Card Game appearances. As set forth by Major League Baseball rules, an AL team must have played .500 baseball or better during the previous setting season in order to qualify for a playoff berth; by contrast, since baseball expanded to a best-of-seven game World Series format in 1903, only four teams have failed to make it to that round after playing .500 ball or better during their qualifying season: the 1908 Chicago White Sox (who were overtaken by Detroit), the 2014 Baltimore Orioles (who were overtaken by Kansas City), the 2018 Seattle Mariners (who were overtaken by Oakland), and now possibly the 2021 Red Sox (who would be overtaken by Toronto if they lose their final game).

Houston Astros

The Houston Astros are an American professional baseball team based in Houston, Texas. The Astros compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) West division, having moved to the division in 2013 after spending their first 51 seasons in the National League (NL).

The Astros have played their home games at Minute Maid Park since 2000. The team was established as the Houston Colt .45s and began play in 1962 as a member of the NL West. The Astros played in one World Series in 2017, winning in seven games over the Los Angeles Dodgers. They are one of two MLB teams to have never lost a playoffs series, along with the New York Yankees.

Cleveland Indians

The Cleveland Indians are an American professional baseball team based in Cleveland, Ohio. They are members of the American League (AL) Central division. Since 1994, they have played at Progressive Field. The team’s spring training facility is at Goodyear Ballpark in Goodyear, Arizona.

Since their establishment as a Major League baseball franchise in 1901, the Indians have won two World Series championships: in 1920 and 1948, along with 10 Central Division titles and six American League pennants. The Indians have the longest active winning streak in American League history, winning 22 games in a row from June 2017 to July 2017.

National League

The National League playoff teams have been decided. The Washington Nationals, Los Angeles Dodgers, Atlanta Braves, and Milwaukee Brewers will be in the National League playoffs. These teams have all had great seasons and it will be exciting to see who comes out on top.

Los Angeles Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers are an American professional baseball team based in Los Angeles, California. The Dodgers compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the National League (NL) West division. Established in 1883 in Brooklyn, New York, the team moved to Los Angeles before the 1958 season. They played four seasons at Dodger Stadium before moving to their current home of Chavez Ravine in 1962.

The Dodgers as a franchise have won six World Series titles and 21 National League pennants. 11 NL MVP award winners have played for the Dodgers, winning a total of 16 MVP Awards, eight Cy Young Award winners have pitched for the Dodgers, winning a total of eleven Cy Young Awards. The team has also produced 18 Rookie of the Year Award winners, twice as many as the next closest team, including four consecutive from 1979 to 1982 and five consecutive from 1992 to 1996.

The Dodgers have had four players inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame: Duke Snider (inducted 1974), Waxahachie ”Gil” Hodges (inducted 1984), Tommy Lasorda (inducted 1997), and Don Sutton (inducted 1998).

Milwaukee Brewers

The Milwaukee Brewers are an American professional baseball team based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The Brewers compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the National League (NL) Central division. The team is named after the city’s association with the brewing industry. Since 2001, the Brewers have played their home games at Miller Park, which has a seating capacity of 41,900.

The team was founded in 1969 as the Seattle Pilots, an expansion team of the American League (AL), but was soon acquired in bankruptcy court by Bud Selig and renamed the Milwaukee Brewers. In 1998, Selig gained full ownership of the team.

The Pilots played their home games at Sick’s Stadium. After one failed attempt to build a multipurpose stadium, county voters approved a tax to finance Miller Park. It was built partly with revenue from a 0.1% sales tax that began in 1996; it is currently one of five stadiums in MLB that were financed primarily through public funds and one of two located in Wisconsin ( Lambeau Field is located near Green Bay).

The first MLB game played in Milwaukee was on April 7, 1953, when the Boston Braves played the Pittsburgh Pirates at County Stadium; County Stadium would also be home to the Braves from 1953 until 1965.

Chicago Cubs

As of October 2, the Chicago Cubs have clinched the National League Central title and are headed to the playoffs. They will most likely face off against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the first round.

Atlanta Braves

The Atlanta Braves are an American professional baseball franchise based in the Atlanta metropolitan area. The Braves compete in Major League Baseball as a member club of the National League East division, having played in that division since 1997. They played their home games at Turner Field from 1997 to 2016, and have played their home games at SunTrust Park since 2017.
