The National Football League (NFL) playoffs are a single-elimination tournament held after the regular season to determine the champion of the league. A total of 12 teams make the playoffs: the six teams with the best record in each conference (NFC and AFC), as well as the four wild card teams with the next best records.
So who’s in the playoffs this year? Here’s a look at the NFL playoff picture as it stands heading into Week 17 of the regular
AFC
If the playoffs started today, these are the NFL teams that would be in and out. The current standings are as follows: The Baltimore Ravens would be the number one seed in the AFC and would have a first-round bye. The New England Patriots would be the number two seed and would also have a first-round bye.
Baltimore Ravens
As of right now, the Baltimore Ravens are in the playoffs for the NFL. This could change as the season progresses, but for right now, they are in.
Buffalo Bills
The Buffalo Bills are a professional American football team based in the Buffalo–Niagara Falls metropolitan area. The Bills compete in the National Football League (NFL), as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) East division. The team plays their home games at New Era Field in Orchard Park, New York. The Bills are the only NFL team that plays its home games in the state of New York. The Bills conduct summer training camp at St. John Fisher College in Pittsford, New York, an eastern suburb of Rochester.
Houston Texans
The Houston Texans are a professional football team based in Houston, Texas. They are members of the South Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the National Football League (NFL). The team plays its home games at NRG Stadium.
Kansas City Chiefs
The Kansas City Chiefs are a professional American football team based in Kansas City, Missouri. The Chiefs compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) West division. The team was founded in 1960 as the Dallas Texans by businessman Lamar Hunt and was a charter member of the American Football League (AFL). In 1963, the team relocated to Kansas City and assumed their current name. The Chiefs joined the NFL as a result of the AFL–NFL merger in 1970. The team is valued at over $2 billion. Hunt’s son, Clark, serves as chairman and CEO.
While the franchise has not won a Super Bowl title, they have appeared in two Super Bowls, winning one. The team owns the record for most conference championships in a row with 10 straight wins from 1971 to 1980 (including eight consecutive AFC titles, a league record), matching the mark set by their then-AFL predecessors, the Buffalo Bills, from 1990 to 1993; both streaks include only conference championship game appearances, not necessarily wins (in NFL history, only three other teams have made it to at least eight straight conference championship games: Miami Dolphins—twice; San Francisco 49ers; and New England Patriots). As of 2019, the franchise has appeared in more than a dozen playoff seasons since 1960 but has never hosted or played in a conference championship game.
New England Patriots
The New England Patriots are a professional American football team based in the Greater Boston area. The Patriots compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) East division. The Patriots are also headquartered at Gillette Stadium. An original member of the American Football League (AFL), the Patriots joined the NFL in 1970 as part of the AFL–NFL merger. The team changed its name from the original Boston Patriots after relocating to Foxborough in 1971. The Patriots played their home games at Foxboro Stadium from 1971 to 2001, then moved to Gillette Stadium at the start of their 2002 season.
Pittsburgh Steelers
The Pittsburgh Steelers are a professional American football team based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Steelers compete in the National Football League (NFL), as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) North division. Founded in 1933, the Steelers are the oldest franchise in the AFC.
In contrast with their status as perennial also-rans in the pre-merger NFL, where they were the oldest team never to win a league championship, the Steelers of the post-merger era are one of the most successful NFL franchises. Since the beginning of the Super Bowl era in 1966, they have played in eight Super Bowls, winning six of them – more than any other team in NFL history. The Steelers have won more conference championships (19) than any other team has won overall – either conference or league championship – since 1970. They are also tied with Dalla
Tennessee Titans
The Tennessee Titans are a professional American football team based in Nashville, Tennessee. The Titans compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the American Football Conference (AFC) South division. The Oilers won the first two AFL Championships, and joined the NFL as part of the AFL–NFL merger in 1970.
NFC

Dallas Cowboys
The Dallas Cowboys are a professional American football team based in the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. The Cowboys compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) East division. They are headquartered in Frisco, Texas, and play their home games at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, which opened for the 2009 season. The stadium took the place of the open-air Cotton Bowl, which served as the Cowboys’ home stadium from 1960 to 2008.
Green Bay Packers
The Packers qualified for the playoffs for the 8th consecutive season, tying a franchise record set between 1993 and 2000. They also became the first team ever to make the playoffs in 8 straight seasons in which they had a losing record in at least one game, as well as being the only team to do so with a sub-.500 record overall. They also joined the 2014 Dallas Cowboys, 2015 Carolina Panthers and 2016 Detroit Lions as the only teams since the current playoff format was adopted in 1990 to make the playoffs with a losing record. The Packers entered Week 17 ranked 7th in the NFC, but they moved up to 6th after Seattle’s loss to Arizona, clinching a playoff berth.
Los Angeles Rams
The NFC playoffs are set, and it’s a loaded field with some of the best teams in the NFL. The Rams, Saints, Cowboys and Bears all earned first-round byes, while the Seahawks, Vikings, Eagles and Packers will all be in action this weekend. Here’s a closer look at all eight NFC playoff teams.
Minnesota Vikings
As the NFC’s second seed behind the Los Angeles Rams, the Minneapolis Miracle-makers are in a great spot heading into the NFL playoffs. They have a first-round bye and will host a Divisional Round game at U.S. Bank Stadium on Sunday, Jan. 13. The Vikings have been on fire lately, winning seven of their last eight games. quarterback Kirk Cousins is playing some of the best football of his career and wide receiver Stefon Diggs has developed into one of the most dangerous weapons in the NFL. If they can keep it up, the Vikings have a great chance to make a run at the Super Bowl.
New Orleans Saints

The Saints currently compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) South division. The team was founded by John W. Mecom Jr., David Dixon, and the city of New Orleans on November 1, 1966. The Saints began play in Tulane Stadium in 1967.
The name “Saints” is an allusion to November 1 being All Saints Day in the Catholic faith, as well as to the song “When the Saints Go Marching In”, which is often sung by fans at sporting events. They joined the NFL as an expansion team in 1967 along with the Seattle Seahawks but have only won one Super Bowl, which came at the end of the 2009 season led by then-MVP Drew Brees, defeating Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts 31–17.
San Francisco 49ers
As the NFC West champions, the San Francisco 49ers have clinched a spot in the playoffs. They will host a playoff game at Levi’s Stadium. The date and time of the game has not yet been announced.
Seattle Seahawks
The Seattle Seahawks are a professional American football franchise based in Seattle, Washington. The Seahawks compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) West division. They joined the NFL in 1976 as an expansion team.
