As the baseball playoffs wind down, we take a look at which teams are still in the running for the World Series title.
American League
It’s that time of year again where the temperature starts to drop, the leaves start to change color, and the baseball playoffs are in full swing. The American League is down to just two teams, the Houston Astros and the New York Yankees. Who will come out on top?
Boston Red Sox
The Boston Red Sox are an American professional baseball team based in Boston, Massachusetts. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. The Red Sox have won nine World Series championships, tied for the third-most of any MLB team, and they have played in 13. Their most recent appearance and win was in 2018.
Cleveland Indians
The 2017 Cleveland Indians season is the 117th season for the franchise. The Indians compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) Central division. The team plays its home games at Progressive Field, located in downtown Cleveland. Terry Francona is in his fifth season as the team’s manager.
Houston Astros
The Houston Astros are an American professional baseball team based in Houston, Texas. The Astros compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) West division, having moved to the division in 2013 after spending their first 51 seasons in the National League (NL). The Astros have played their home games at Minute Maid Park since 2000.
New York Yankees
The New York Yankees are an American professional baseball team based in the New York City borough of the Bronx. The Yankees compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. They are one of two major league clubs based in New York City, the other being the National League’s (NL) New York Mets.
National League
The National League is down to two teams after the Milwaukee Brewers were eliminated by the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday. The Dodgers will now face the Atlanta Braves in the National League Championship Series.
Arizona Diamondbacks
The Arizona Diamondbacks are a professional baseball team based in Phoenix, Arizona. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the National League (NL) West division. The team plays its home games at Chase Field, formerly known as Bank One Ballpark.
Los Angeles Dodgers
The Los Angeles Dodgers are an American professional baseball team based in Los Angeles, California. The Dodgers compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the National League (NL) West division. Established in 1883 in Brooklyn, New York, the team moved to Los Angeles before the 1958 season. They played for four seasons at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum before moving to Dodger Stadium, their current home, in 1962.
Milwaukee Brewers
The Milwaukee Brewers are an American professional baseball team based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The Brewers compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the National League (NL) Central division. The team is named after the city’s association with the brewing industry. Since 2001, the Brewers have played their home games at Miller Park, which has a seating capacity of 41,900.
The team played their first season in 1970 as an expansion team of the American League (AL), and were placed in the AL East division. In 1982, Milwaukee switched over to the NL Central, where they have remained ever since. The Brewers made the playoffs for the first time in 1981, when they beat the Baltimore Orioles in a one-game playoff for the AL East title. They returned to the playoffs in 1982 and 1983, winning their first postseason series in 1982 against the California Angels, but losing to the St. Louis Cardinals in 1983. In 2008, they were one of six NL teams that advanced to postseason play by wild card berth, and won their first NLDS against the Wild Card-winning Philadelphia Phillies before being swept by eventual World Series champions Boston Red Sox
Colorado Rockies
The Colorado Rockies are an American professional baseball team based in Denver, Colorado. The Rockies compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the National League (NL) West division. The team’s home venue is Coors Field, located in the Lower Downtown area of Denver.
