Cleveland Cavaliers
The Cleveland Cavaliers are an American professional basketball team based in Cleveland, Ohio. The Cavaliers compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Eastern Conference Central Division. The team began play as an expansion team in 1970, along with the Portland Trail Blazers and Buffalo Braves. Home games were first held at Cleveland Arena from 1970 to 1974, followed by the Richfield Coliseum from 1974 to 1994. Since 1994, the Cavs have played their home games at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in downtown Cleveland.
Los Angeles Clippers
The Los Angeles Clippers are an American professional basketball team based in Los Angeles. The Clippers compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Western Conference Pacific Division. The Clippers were founded in 1970 as the Buffalo Braves, one of three expansion teams to join the NBA that year. The Braves moved from Buffalo, New York to San Diego, California in 1978 and became known as the San Diego Clippers. In 1984, The Clipper’s franchise moved to Los Angeles.
The franchise began in Western New York as the Buffalo Braves, one of three NBA expansion franchises that began play in the 1970–71 season, along with the Portland Trail Blazers and Cleveland Cavaliers. They played their home games at Buffalo Memorial Auditorium from 1970 to 1978. The Braves qualified for the NBA playoffs three times in a row from 1974 to 1976. In 1980, after a dispute between Brave owner John Y. Brown Jr., who also owned the Kentucky Colonels of the American Basketball Association (ABA), and Commissioner Larry O’Brien, Brown sold his interest in both teams to seize control of the Cleveland Cavaliers and veteran ABA star Julius Erving. However, ECB chairman George Nagel refused to accept Brown’s offer and announced that he would instead fold either team or sell both franchises for $6 million each on May 12th 1980; a day later on May 13th 1980 Nagel announced he had found a local group headed by Irving Levin which had offered four million dollars for each club; however it was revealed Levin would keep both clubs if his purchases were approved by two-thirds majority vote by existing NBA owners which never happened leaving both franchises remaining under NBA control until they were finally purchased later that summer.
Dallas Mavericks
The Dallas Mavericks are an American professional basketball team based in Dallas, Texas. The Mavericks compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member club of the league’s Western Conference Southwest Division. The team plays its home games at the American Airlines Center, which it shares with the National Hockey League’s Dallas Stars.
Denver Nuggets
The Denver Nuggets are an American professional basketball team based in Denver, Colorado. The Nuggets compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Western Conference Northwest Division. The team was founded as the Denver Larks in 1967 as a charter franchise of the American Basketball Association (ABA), but changed its name to Rockets before the first season. It changed its name again to the Nuggets in 1974. After the name change, the Nuggets played for the final ABA Championship title in 1976, losing to the New York Nets.
The team has had some periods of success, qualifying for the ABA Playoffs for all seasons from 1967 to the 1976 ABA playoffs where it lost in the finals. The team joined the NBA in 1976 after the ABA–NBA merger and qualified for the NBA playoffs in nine consecutive seasons from 1977 to 1985, reaching one Western Conference Finals appearance . However, it failed to make a playoff appearance from 1986 until 2003, including a 16-year drought from 1988 to 2003; during that span, they compiled a league-worst winning percentage of .397%.
The Nuggets began their rebuilding process post-Karma era with Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups in 2007. Billups was shipped off in 2011 with Timofey Mozgov due to salary cap issues, while Anthony was traded in 2013 bringing back key players like Kenneth Faried and Andre Iguodala while adding veteran players like Randy Foye and Javy Lopez.
Detroit Pistons
The Detroit Pistons are an American professional basketball team based in Auburn Hills, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. The Pistons compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member club of the Eastern Conference Central Division. The team plays its home games at The Palace of Auburn Hills and was founded in Fort Wayne, Indiana as the Fort Wayne Pistons in 1941, a member of the National Basketball League (NBL). The Pistons joined the Basketball Association of America (BAA) in 1948. In 1949, the NBL and BAA merged to become the NBA, and the Pistons became part of the merged league.

The Grizzlies have qualified for three playoffs since relocating to Memphis; they first made it in 2004 as the eighth seed in the Western Conference, but were swept byVP San Antonio Spurs 4-0in the first round; they next made it as sixth seed again in 2006 but were eliminated by Dallas Mavericks 4-1in first round; and most recently made it as seventh seed again by upsetting second seed San Antonio Spurs 101-98 on April 15, 2011 during their final regular season game, before losing to Oklahoma City Thunder 4-1 during first round of2011 playoffs.
Miami Heat
The Miami Heat are an American professional basketball team based in Miami. The Heat compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Eastern Conference Southeast Division. The Heat play their home games at American Airlines Arena, and have won three NBA championships.
The franchise began play in 1988 as an expansion team, where after a period of mediocrity, the Heat would gain relevance during the 1990s following the appointment of former head coach Pat Riley in 1995, who helped lead the team to their first playoff appearance and their first NBA Finals appearance in 1997. Riley would be succeeded by Stan Van Gundy in 2003, who remained as head coach until 2005. In 2006, Erik Spoelstra was hired as head coach.
After the retirement of long-time franchise player Dwyane Wade following the 2016–17 season, Spoelstra led the Heat to four consecutive NBA Playoffs appearances from 2017 to 2020. During that span, they reached two NBA Finals (in 2020 and 2021), winning their fourth championship in six years after defeating the Los Angeles Lakers 4–2 in the 2020 NBA Finals.
Milwaukee Bucks
The Milwaukee Bucks are an American professional basketball team based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The Bucks compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Eastern Conference Central Division. The team was founded in 1968 as an expansion team, and play at the Fiserv Forum. Former U.S. Senator Herb Kohl was the long-time owner of the team, but on April 16, 2014, a group led by billionaire hedge fund managers Wes Edens and Marc Lasry agreed to purchase a majority interest in the team from Kohl, a sale which was approved by the NBA Board of Governors on May 15. The new owners appointed John Hammond as general manager in 2008.
In 2018–19, under head coach Mike Budenholzer, the Bucks finished with the best record in the NBA at 60–22, winning their first division title since 2001 and earning the top seed for the playoffs for the first time since Reagan was president; they eventually lost in six games to eventual champion Toronto Raptors in the Eastern Conference Finals.
Minnesota Timberwolves
The Minnesota Timberwolves are an American professional basketball team based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Timberwolves compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Western Conference Northwest Division. The team was founded in 1989 as an expansion team, and plays its home games at Target Center, which opened in 1990.
New Orleans Pelicans
The New Orleans Pelicans are an American professional basketball team based in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Pelicans compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member club of the league’s Western Conference Southwest Division. The team plays their home games in the Smoothie King Center.
The Pelicans were established as the New Orleans Hornets in the 2002–03 season when then-owner of the Charlotte Hornets, George Shinn, relocated the franchise to New Orleans. Due to the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the franchise temporarily relocated to Oklahoma City, where they spent two seasons officially known as the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets. The team returned to New Orleans full-time for the 2007–08 season. On January 24, 2013, the franchise announced it would rename itself the Pelicans, effective after conclusion of the 2012–13 season. Their achievements include one conference title (in 2018–19) and one division title (in 2019–20).
New York Knicks
The New York Knicks are an American professional basketball team based in New York City. The Knicks compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference. The team plays its home games at Madison Square Garden, an arena they share with the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League (NHL). They are one of two NBA teams located in New York City; the other is the Brooklyn Nets.
The Knicks were founded in 1946 as part of the Basketball Association of America (BAA), and were one of 11 original NBA teams. They joined the NBA after winning the championship of that league during its inaugural season. The Knicks won two more championships within five years of joining the NBA, and also won seven division titles in that time frame. Since then, they have been one of basketball’s most successful teams, winning four conference titles and three division titles while making 22 playoff appearances over 67 seasons. However, they have failed to win an NBA championship since 1973, and their 19–60 win–loss record during the 2014–15 season was their worst ever.
Oklahoma City Thunder
The Oklahoma City Thunder are an American professional basketball team based in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The Thunder compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Western Conference Northwest Division. The team plays its home games at Chesapeake Energy Arena.
The Thunder were originally the Seattle SuperSonics, an expansion team that began play in 1967. The SuperSonics moved to Oklahoma City in 2008 after a settlement was reached between the ownership group led by Clay Bennett and lawmakers in Seattle, Washington following a lawsuit. In Seattle, the SuperSonics qualified for the NBA playoffs 22 times, won their division six times, advanced to three NBA Finals, and won the 1979 NBA Championship. In Oklahoma City, theThunder have appeared in the NBA playoffs eight times since relocating, winning their division three times and advancing to one NBA Finals in 2012 where they lost to the Miami Heat in five games. Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, James Harden, Serge Ibaka and Reggie Jackson are all All-Stars who played for the Sonic/Thunder organization.

Walter Kennedy and representatives of then-ABA owner Dave Dixon to bring one or more ABA franchises into the NBA.. The Orlando Magic are an American professional basketball team based in Orlando, Florida. The Magic compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Eastern Conference Southeast Division. The franchise was established in 1989 as an expansion team, and such notable NBA stars as Shaquille O’Neal, Penny Hardaway, Anfernee Hardaway, Grant Hill, Tracy McGrady, Steve Francis, Dwight Howard, Vince Carter, Rashard Lewis, Dominique Wilkins, and Hedo Türkoğlu have played for the club throughout its young history. As of 2019, the franchise has played in the NBA playoffs for exactly half of its existence (14 out of 28 seasons), and twice went to the NBA Finals, in 1995 and 2009. The Portland Trail Blazers are an American professional basketball team based in Portland, Oregon. The Trail Blazers compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Western Conference Northwest Division. The franchise played its home games in the Memorial Coliseum before moving to Moda Center in 1995 (called the Rose Garden until 2013).
