The Patriots have appeared in ten Super Bowls since 1981, winning six of them – Super Bowls XX, XXXI, XXXVI, XXXVIII, XLIX, and LI– and losing four – Super Bowls XXII, XXVIII, XLII, andXLVI. They have won seventeen AFC East championships (including five consecutive championships from 2003 to 2007), eleven AFC Championships (including five consecutive championships from 2011 to 2016), and seven Super Bowl titles. Since 2002, the Seahawks have played their home games at CenturyLink Field, located south of downtown Seattle. The Seahawks previously played home games in the Kingdome (1976–1999) and Husky Stadium (1994, 2000–2001).

In March 1975, Jack Patera, a former University of Minnesota assistant coach, was hired as the first head coach and general manager of the Seahawks. The expansion draft was held March 30–31, 1976, with Seattle and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers alternating picks for rounds selecting unprotected players from the other 26 teams in the league. The Seahawks were awarded the 2nd overall pick in the 1976 draft where they selected Steve Niehaus, a defensive tackle from Notre Dame. In February 1977, Patera was fired after compiling a record of 0–2; he would later go on to lead his hometown Minnesota Vikings to five NFC Central titles between 1979 and 1982. Jim Mora would be hired as his successor three weeks later.[8] In 1978,, Bert Bell Award winner Jim Zorn became Seattle’s starting quarterback after losing his first six starts under Mora; during that season running back Curtis Crenshaw rushed for 1120yds along with 5 touchdowns.[9] Zorn led Seattle to their first ever playoff berth in 1983 after winning their final 5 regular season games.[10][11] After reaching their second NFC Championship game in 1984,[12] Mora was again fired following a disappointing 10-6 season finishing 2nd place behind divisional rival Los Angeles Rams,[13][14] who would go on to win Super Bowl XVIII that year.[15] He would be replaced by Chuck Knox who then lead them to 3 consecutive playoff berths including another NFC Championship game appearance in 1987[16][17] during which they lost 30-13 to eventual Super Bowl champion Washington Redskins.[18]
