Introduction

The National Football League (NFL) is a professional American football league consisting of 32 teams, divided equally between the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC). The NFL is one of the four major North American professional sports leagues, the highest professional level of American football in the world. The NFL was formed in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association (APFA) before renaming itself the National Football League for the 1922 season.

The NFL agreement with television networks stipulates that games cannot be simulcast on more than one network. However, games may be shown on a local basis if they are not being aired on a national network. For example, games shown on Thursday or Saturday nights will not be shown on a national basis unless they are part of a national holiday or special event (such as the Super Bowl).

AFC

The American Football Conference (AFC) is one of the two conferences of the National Football League (NFL), the highest professional level of American football in the world. This conference and its counterpart, the National Football Conference (NFC), currently contain 16 teams each, making up a total of 32 teams in the NFL. Both conferences were created as a result of the AFL–NFL merger in 1970.

While similar in name and structure to their collegiate counterpart, the AFC and NFC are not affiliated with any college or university football league. The only collegiate football conference with which the NFL is affiliated is the Ivy League, although even that relationship is purely informal and has no bearing on professional play. The AFC divisional layout since 2002 has been as follows:

-AFC East: Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, New York Jets
-AFC North: Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers
-AFC South: Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, Tennessee Titans
-AFC West: Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, Oakland Raiders, Los Angeles Chargers
