TheHeat play their home games at American Airlines Arena, and have won three NBA championships.
The franchise began play in 1988 as an expansion team, where after a period of mediocrity, the Heat would gain relevance during the 1990s following the acquisition of center Alonzo Mourning in 1995. The same year, point guard Tim Hardaway was acquired in a trade with the Golden State Warriors. After winning two playoff series in the first round and falling to the eventual Eastern Conference champion New York Knicks in five games during their first season,Miami struggled through much of their early history, failing to post a winning record until 1993–94, when they managed to do so for only a second time since joining the NBA. Mourning and Hardaway would lead the Heat to four playoff appearances including two conference finals appearances prior to their departures in 2001 and 2002 respectively.
In 2003, with Mourning sidelined due to kidney illness andHardaway playing limited minutes due to numerous injuries, Pat Riley signed free agent shooting guard Dwyane Wade who at 23 was still one year removed from his collegiate career at Marquette University. Wade helped leadMiami on a 27-game winning streak that spanned from late January to March 2004 en route to Wade’s first NBA All-Star selection that season as well as helping assisting Miami into playoff contention for just the third time since joining the NBA. As Shaquille O’Neal joined Mourning to form a dominating one-two punch in the middle for Miami that season, Wade emerged as not only one of Miami’s best players but also one of the best young player’s in the league; leading Miami to their maiden playoff appearance where they eventually fell to Indiana Pacers 4–2 in the first round.

The team, established by Ned Irish in 1946, was one of the founding members of the Basketball Association of America (BAA), which became the NBA after merging with the rival National Basketball League (NBL) in 1949. The Knicks were successful during their early years and were constant playoff contenders under the leadership of players such as Harry Gallatin, Dick McGuire, Dave DeBusschere, and Bill Bradley. In 1970, they captured their first Eastern Conference championship and advanced to the NBA Finals, where they faced Los Angeles Lakers. However, they were unable to win a championship despite fielding some of the league’s best players, such as Walt Frazier and Earl Monroe. As a result, Jeff Van Gundy was hired as head coach in 1995. He led them to two consecutive winning seasons before being fired following a dispute with Sprewell in 1999.
Donnie Walsh brought stability to the franchise by hiring former head coach Larry Brown in 2006. The Knicks made several postseason appearances under Brown and despite having aging stars such as Allison Harrington and Jamal Crawford on their roster at various times, they never advanced beyond the first round of playoffs during his tenure. In 2009–10, led by a newly acquired Amar’e Stoudemire who was paired with emerging star Raymond Felton at point guard, they posted their first winning season since 2000–01—a 43-win campaign that saw them return to prominence after years on decline followingthe retirement of Patrick Ewing and demise Jeff Van Gundy’s coaching tenures —and returned to playoffs for first time since 2004 by clinching seventh seed with win over Toronto Raptors on April 11th 2010 with 42nd win; however lost to eventual Eastern Conference champions Boston Celtics in first round 4-2 despite Stoudemire averaging 27 points per game during series.
