The Lakers are one of the most successful teams in the history of the NBA, and have won 16 NBA championships, the second-most behind the Boston Celtics. The franchise began with the 1947 purchase of a disbanded team, the Detroit Gems of the National Basketball League (NBL). The new team began playing in Minneapolis, calling themselves the Minneapolis Lakers in honor of Minnesota’s nickname, “Land of 10,000 Lakes”. Initially a member of the NBL, the Lakers won the 1948 NBL championship before joining the rival Basketball Association of America (BAA), where they would win five of their next six championships. In 1949, led by center George Mikan, who is described by ESPN as basketball’s first true superstar player, the Lakers won a third straight championship. After struggling financially in 1957–58 due to Mikan retirement and relocation from Minneapolis to Los Angeles didn’t help matters much either but things improved when they signed Elgin Baylor as their draft pick in 1958 and he became one

of their star players while Jerry West emerged as another star for them too while Chick Hearn provided excellent play-by-play commentary during their broadcasts which added to their appeal even more for fans and helped make them become one of if not THE most popular team in not just California but all across America as well during that time.

In 1962, Frank Selvy scored 100 points against them becoming onlythe second player to do so but despite that they went on to win their 4th championship led by West and Baylor while Hearn continued providing great commentary for them on TV. They suffered some hard times though after losing Baylor to retirement and then West too along with Selvy but they eventually recovered when they drafted Kareem Abdul-Jabbar who’d go on to become one of THE greatest players in NBA history while acquiring Star player Earvin “Magic” Johnson helped them immensely too as he was not only an excellent player but also proved to be very popular with fans as well which only added to their fan base even more.

With Abdul-Jabbar and Johnson leading the way, they won 5 more championships between 1980 and 1988 while Hearn continued broadcasting games for them on TV becoming not just THE voice of the Lakers but also becoming extremely popular in Southern California during that time as he became known for not just his great play-by-play commentary but also his catchy phrases which included “slam dunk”, “air ball” and “Hand it up! Shoot it!” among others which helped make him an iconic sports broadcaster.
