It’s time to start thinking about who the NFL Rookie of the Year 2021 will be. Here are a few names to keep an eye on.

Kyler Murray- Arizona Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals selected Kyler Murray with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft. Murray, a two-sport star who also played Major League Baseball, became the first player in history to be drafted in the first round of both the NFL and MLB drafts. He chose to pursue a career in football, and he was named the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2019.

Kyler Murray was born on August 7, 1997, in Texas to Kevin and Missy Murray. He has an older brother, Casey. Murray’s father was a former minor league baseball player with the Milwaukee Brewers organization and his grandfather, Calvin Murray, played Major League Baseball (MLB) for the San Francisco Giants, Chicago Cubs, and Baltimore Orioles. Murray’s great-uncle, Dick Tidrow, also pitched in MLB for 11 seasons. Growing up, Murray played both baseball and football while also participating in track. As a senior at Allen High School in 2015, he threw for 4,713 yards and 54 touchdowns as the Eagles won the Texas 6A Division I state championship. He also hit 22 home runs as an outfielder on the baseball team that year.

In his NFL debut, Murray completed 25-of-41 passes for 308 yards and two touchdowns as the Cardinals were defeated by the Detroit Lions, 27–27. He also rushed for 93 yards on 18 carries, becoming the first player in NFL history to throw for 300+ yards and rush for 90+ yards in a season opener.

With his performance, Murray became only the third player ever to record multiple rushing touchdowns of 50 or more yards through his first four career games joining Adrian Peterson (2007) and Beattie Feathers (1934). He was also named NFC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance becoming only rookie quarterback ever to win NFC Offensive Player of the Week honors twice through his team’s first four games joining Robert Griffin III (2012) and Matthew Stafford (2009).

Gardner Minshew- Jacksonville Jaguars

Gardner Minshew was born on March 16, 1994, in Brandon, Mississippi. He is an American football quarterback for the Jacksonville Jaguars of the NFL. He played college football at East Carolina and Washington State.

Gardner Minshew was born in Brandon, Mississippi, on March 16, 1996. He is the son of Stacy Minshew and Alvis Minshew. His father played football at Itawamba Community College. Gardner’s grandfather was also a football player. Gardner has two brothers named Logan and Beck.

Gardner played football and baseball in high school. He was a three-sport athlete in football, baseball, and track & field. Gardner played quarterback and safety for his high school football team. He was named Mr. Football in the state of Mississippi as a senior in 2013.

Gardner committed to play college football at the University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB) in 2014. After UAB shut down its football program, Gardner transferred to Northwest Mississippi Community College for one season of junior college football.

In 2016, Gardner transferred to Washington State University (WSU). He became the starting quarterback for the Cougars as a junior in 2017. In 2018, Gardner’s senior year, he threw for 4,779 yards with 38 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. He won the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and was named first team All-Pac 12.

Rookie wide receiver A.J. Brown has had an incredible season for the Tennessee Titans. He was a second-round pick out of Ole Miss, and he’s made an immediate impact for his team. Brown has caught 52 passes for 1,051 yards and eight touchdowns. He’s also been a key contributor on special teams, returning a punt for a touchdown. Brown is the clear-cut favorite for Rookie of the Year.

Terry McLaurin had an incredible rookie season. McLaurin was drafted in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins. He was the only rookie wide receiver to start all 16 games. McLaurin had 58 receptions for 919 yards and seven touchdowns. He averaged 15.9 yards per reception and 57.4 yards per game. McLaurin also had four catches of 40 or more yards.

Terry McLaurin was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, on October 14, 1996. He played wide receiver and defensive back at St. Louis Catholic High School in Louisiana before enrolling at Ohio State University. As a Buckeye, McLaurin was a three-time All-Big Ten selection and a two-time Academic All-American. He also set the school record for most touchdown catches in a season by a receiver with 11 in 2017. McLaurin capped off his collegiate career with a strong performance in the 2019 Cotton Bowl, catching four passes for 125 yards and two touchdowns to help Ohio State beat USC 24-7.

The Washington Redskins selected McLaurin in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He made an immediate impact as a rookie, catching 58 passes for 919 yards and seven touchdowns. His production helped the Redskins earn a spot in the NFC Wild Card playoffs, where they lost to the Seattle Seahawks.

McLaurin’s impressive 2019 campaign led many to consider him a candidate for Rookie of the Year honors, but he ultimately fell short to Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray. He did, however, earn a spot on the NFL All-Rookie Team.
