Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was born Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor Jr. on April 16, 1947, in New York City. The only child of Cora Lillian (née Johnson), a department store price checker, and Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor Sr., a transit police officer and jazz musician, he was raised by his mother in the Inwood section of Manhattan in New York City’s borough of Manhattan. His father died of heart failure in 1978 when Kareem was 31 years old.

Karl Malone was born on July 24, 1963, in Summerfield, Louisiana. He was the youngest of nine children born to Shirley and J. Malone. His father was a laborer who worked long hours to support his family, and his mother was a homemaker. Malone’s parents divorced when he was three years old, and he and his siblings were raised by their mother in a strict Baptist household.

Malone began playing basketball at an early age, and it quickly became clear that he had a natural talent for the sport. He attended high school in nearby Bernice, Louisiana, where he led his team to the state championship game as a senior. After graduation, Malone accepted a scholarship to play basketball at Louisiana Tech University.
