NHL Awards
The National Hockey League awards are presented annually to a player, team, or executive who has shown outstanding achievement during the regular season. The Hart Memorial Trophy, or simply the Hart Trophy, is awarded to the “player judged most valuable to his team.” The trophy is named after Canadian Dr. David Hart, who donated it to the league in 1923.
Hart Memorial Trophy
The Hart Memorial Trophy, originally known as the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup, is awarded annually to the “player judged most valuable to his team” in the National Hockey League (NHL). The original trophy was donated to the league in 1923 by David Hart, the father of Cecil Hart, the longtime head coach of the Montreal Canadiens. The Hart Trophy has been awarded 92 times to 54 different players since its beginnings in 1924. Each year, members of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association vote to determine the player who was the most valuable during the regular season.
The Hart Memorial Trophy is named in honor of Canadian Dr. David Hart. Dr. Hart, who donated the trophy to the NHL, was the father of Cecil Hart, a former player and longtime coach for the Montreal Canadiens. The trophy was first awarded at the conclusion of the 1923–24 NHL season to Frank Nighbor of the Ottawa Senators.
Vezina Trophy
The Vezina Trophy is awarded annually to the National Hockey League’s (NHL) goaltender who is “adjudged to be the best at this position”. It is named in honor of Georges Vezina, goaltender of the Montreal Canadiens from 1910 until 1925, who died in 1926 of tuberculosis. The trophy was first awarded at the end of the 1926–27 NHL season and was awarded to the Montreal Canadiens. The Vezina Trophy has been awarded 90 times to 54 different goaltenders. It is considered to be one of the most important awards for individual players in the NHL.
Calder Memorial Trophy
The Calder Memorial Trophy is an annual award given “to the player selected as the most proficient in his first year of competition in the National Hockey League (NHL).” It is named after Frank Calder, the first-ever president of the NHL. Serving as an accurate measure of the top rookies in the league, this award has been handed out since its inception at the end of the 1936–37 NHL season.
” Calder was determined that it be a truly representative trophy that would reflect not only outstanding performance but also sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct.” To be eligible for the award, a player cannot have played any more than 25 games in any single preceding season in any major professional league (North American or otherwise). The voting members of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association determine the winner after each regular season by ballots deposited with the league office.
NHL Records
In the National Hockey League, there are many great players. But, there can only be one best player. To find out who that is, we must look at the NHL records.
Most Goals in a Season
The most goals ever scored in an NHL season is 92, a record that has stood for over 50 years. It was set by Billy Boucher of the Montreal Canadiens in 1944-45. Boucher’s record-breaking season came to an abrupt end when he tore a ligament in his ankle during the final game of the regular season. He was never able to return to his scoring ways and his career total of 127 goals is still well short of the NHL record.
Boucher’s 92-goal season is one of only four seasons in which a player has scored more than 90 goals. The other three players to do it are Wayne Gretzky (twice) and Mario Lemieux. Gretzky’s best season was 1981-82, when he tallied 87 goals and 164 points en route to winning the Stanley Cup with the Edmonton Oilers. Lemieux comes in a close second with 85 goals and 188 points in 1988-89, a season in which he also led the Pittsburgh Penguins to their first Stanley Cup championship.
Most Assists in a Season
The most assists in a season is held by Mario Lemieux, who had 85 assists in the 1988-1989 season.
Most Points in a Season
In the 2005–06 season, Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins became the youngest player and the only teenager to score 100 points in a season. Wayne Gretzky holds the records for most career points (2,857) and most goals in a career (894).
