The National Football League (NFL) is the largest professional American football league. It consists of 32 teams, divided equally between the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC).
The NFL’s History
The National Football League (NFL) is the largest and most popular professional American football league, consisting of 32 teams. The NFL was founded in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association (APFA) with ten teams from four states, all of whom existed in some form as participants of regional leagues in the earlier part of the 20th century. In 1922, the APFA changed its name to the National Football League.
How the NFL Was Founded
The National Football League (NFL) is a professional American football league consisting of 32 teams, divided equally between the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC). The NFL is one of the four major professional sports leagues in North America, and the highest professional level of American football in the world. NFL competition was formed as part of the mergers that occurred in 1966.
Prior to the formation of the NFL, there existed several other football leagues. These included the American Football League (AFL), which was founded in 1959, and its earlier rival, the All-America Football Conference (AAFC). After initially failing to purchase the AFL’s Cleveland Browns franchise in 1959, four NFL teams eventually agreed to merge with AFL teams in June 1966: The Browns joined with the Baltimore Colts while the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants merged with respective AFL franchises, forming what would eventually be known as AFC. This began a rivalry between what would become AFC and NFC.
The First NFL Game
The first NFL game was played on October 3, 1920, between the Dayton Triangles and the Columbus Panhandles in Columbus, Ohio. The Triangles won 14-0. The game was not televised, but an estimated 10,000 fans watched from the stands.
The NFL’s first season was seven games long and ended with the Akron Pros winning the championship. The Pros had a perfect 7-0 record. The league did not have a playoff system in place, so their title was decided by their win-loss record.
The following year, the NFL split into two divisions, the East and the West. The Chicago Bears and the Chicago Cardinals were in the West, while the Green Bay Packers and the New York Giants were in the East. This divisional format is still used today.
In 1932, after several more years of growth, the NFL held its first playoff game. The Packers beat the Bears 9-0 to become league champions.

The NFL’s Popularity
The National Football League (NFL) is a professional American football league consisting of 32 teams, divided equally between the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC). The NFL is one of the four major professional sports leagues in North America, and the highest professional level of American football in the world. NFL fans are some of the most diehard fans around, and the league’s popularity has only grown in recent years.
In 2018, the NFL’s regular season was watched by an average of 15.8 million viewers per game, up 5% from 2017.1 That was the highest average viewership for the NFL since 2016, when an average of 16.5 million people watched each game.2 In total, there were nearly 2 billion viewers who tuned in to watch at least part of an NFL game during the 2018 season.3
Interestingly, the number of people who watched the Super Bowl has actually declined in recent years. In 2018, 103.4 million people watched the New England Patriots win their sixth championship against the Los Angeles Rams—that’s down from 118.2 million viewers in 2017 and 111.9 million in 2016.4 Despite the decline in Super Bowl viewership, however, it’s still by far the most-watched event on television each year; In 2018, it was watched by more than double the number of people who tuned in to second-place finisher The Oscars (40.4 million).5
The NFL’s popularity is due to a number of factors. First and foremost, it’s a great product—the games are usually exciting and well-played, and there is something for everyone to enjoy, whether you’re a casual fan or a diehard devotee. Secondly, the NFL does a great job marketing itself and its product; they’ve done an especially good job in recent years of making sure that games are accessible to as many people as possible through a variety of different channels (television, online streaming services, etc.). Finally, they’ve also been very successful in creating loyalty among their fans; once you’re a fan of a team, you’re likely to stay a fan for life (or at least as long as your team is doing well).
The NFL’s Future
The National Football League (NFL) is a professional American football league consisting of 32 teams, divided equally between the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC). The NFL is one of the four major professional sports leagues in North America, and the highest professional level of American football in the world.
The NFL’s 17-week regular season runs from the week after Labor Day to the week after Christmas, with each team playing 16 games and having one bye week. Following the conclusion of the regular season, six teams from each conference (four division winners and two wild card teams) advance to the playoffs, a single-elimination tournament culminating in the Super Bowl, which is usually held in February and is played between the champions of the NFC and AFC.
The league was founded in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association (APFA) before renaming itself as the National Football League for the 1922 season. The NFL considers itself to be the premier professional football league in America,[2] and claims to have more players and generate more revenue than any other professional football league.[3][4][5] Professional football began around 1892.[6][7] In 1902, several professional baseball clubs formed an organization called Minor League Baseball (later shortened to MLB).National Football League
