We all know that NBA players make a lot of money, but who is the lowest paid player in the league? We did some research and found out who that player is.
NBA Player Salaries
The NBA is a professional basketball league in North America. The league is composed of 30 teams, 29 in the United States and 1 in Canada. The NBA is widely considered to be the premier men’s professional basketball league in the world. It is one of the four major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada, and is widely followed in those countries.
Minimum Salary
The minimum salary in the National Basketball Association (NBA) is $582,180 for the 2020-21 season. Players on rookies’ minimum contracts must be at least 20 years old and have played fewer than three seasons in the NBA. The league’s collective bargaining agreement (CBA) sets out this rule in Article X, Section 1(j)(i).
In order to be eligible for a rookies’ minimum contract, a player must not have been employed under any other contract by any team during the season preceding their signing of a rookies’ minimum contract. If a player signs a contract that is two or more years in length, guarantees them $50,000 or more in any year of the contract, or is for more than the two-year maximum salary amount, they are considered to have been “employed” under that contract and are thus not eligible for a rookies’ minimum salary.
Maximum Salary
In the NBA, the maximum salary a player can earn is determined by the collective bargaining agreement between the NBA and its players. The maximum salary for a player with 0-6 years of experience is $25,500,000, while the maximum salary for a player with 7-9 years of experience is $30,500,000. The maximum salary for a player with 10 or more years of experience is $35,500,000.
Rookie Salary Scale
The NBA has a Rookie Salary Scale that determines how much first-year players can make. The scale is based on the NBA’s salary cap, which is set each year by the league. For the 2019-20 season, the salary cap is $109 million.
Under the rookie scale, players are eligible for a maximum of 120% of the league’s average salary, which for 2019-20 is $7.7 million. So, a player on a rookie contract can earn up to $9.24 million in their first season. rookies sign four-year contracts with team options for the fifth year.
Veteran Minimum Salary
The NBA’s collective bargaining agreement (CBA) establishes a league-wide minimum team salary (“cap”), which in turn sets a maximum amount that any team can pay its players in aggregate. In addition, the CBA stipulates that each team must designate a certain percentage of its cap space (“apron”) for payroll purposes.
As of the 2019/20 season, the minimum team salary is $109 million, while the apron is $138 million. Consequently, the maximum amount that any one team can pay its players is $109 + $138 = $247 million.
The minimum player salary is set at 20% of the cap, which works out to $5.45 million for the 2019/20 season. Players with two or fewer years of service are subject to the league’s rookie wage scale and earn a significantly lower salary.
Lowest Paid NBA Player
The lowest paid NBA player for the 2019-2020 season is rookie center, Bruno Caboclo, who will make $874,636. Unfortunately for Caboclo, he may not see much playing time as he is buried on the Toronto Raptors’ depth chart behind established veterans like Marc Gasol and Serge Ibaka.
Identify the lowest paid NBA player
The lowest paid player in the NBA is Chris Kamara, who earns an annual salary of just $5.5 million. A journeyman player, Kamara has spent time with several teams throughout his career but has never been able to establish himself as a regular starter. As a result, he has had to settle for lower salaries than many of his counterparts.
Analyze the player’s salary
Veterans minimum players are the lowest paid in the NBA. The league minimum salary for a player with 0-6 years of NBA experience is $898,310. The minimum for a player with 7-9 years of experience is $1,349,383. Players with 10+ years of NBA experience have a minimum salary of $2,033,29
The league also has something called the “veteran’s minimum exception,” which allows teams to sign players for less than the minimum salary.
Compare the player’s salary to the NBA average
The lowest paid NBA player for the 2019-2020 season is guard Kay Felder with a salary of $898,310. The average NBA player salary is $7.7 million per year. This means that Felder is making only 12% of what the average NBA player is making this season. In comparison, the highest paid NBA player this season is forward LeBron James with a salary of $37.4 million. This means that James is making almost 5 times as much as Felder!
