The Packers compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) North division. Home games have been played at Lambeau Field since 1957.
The Packers are the last of the “small town teams” which were common in the NFL during the 1920s and 1930s. Founded in 1919 by Earl “Curly” Lambeau and George Whitney Calhoun, the franchise traces its lineage to other semi-professional teams in Green Bay dating back to 1896. Between 1919 and 1920, the Packers competed against other semi-pro clubs from around Wisconsin and Michigan, before joining the American Professional Football Association (APFA), now known as the National Football League (NFL), in 1921. Although Green Bay is by far the smallest major league professional sports market in North America, Forbes ranked the Packers as the world’s 26th most valuable sports franchise in 2016, with a value of $2.35 billion.
The Packers have won 13 league championships, more than any other team in NFL history, with nine pre–Super Bowl NFL titles and four Super Bowl victories. The Packers won the first two Super Bowls in 1967 and 1968 and were runners-up of Super Bowl II. They then qualified to play in five more Super Bowls through 2016 winning three more times after that: XXXI over New England Patriots; XLV over Pittsburgh Steelers;and most recently XLVIII over Carolina Panthers . The team has long enjoyed a widespread fan base throughout Wisconsin as well as support from former Wisconsin governor Tommy Thompson when he served as chairman of the Republican National Committee; many Packer fans joined him when he later advocated for successfully bringing Summerfest to Milwaukee., one of America’s largest music festivals In 2015 Forbes estimated that each Packer home game provides an estimated boost to local tourism expenses valued at about $15 million annually aside from benefits related to stadium construction and operations such as increased employment

Wilson’s average annual salary of $35 million per year is also the highest average annual salary for any player in NFL history.

Since the 1970 AFL–NFL merger, they have posted the NFL’s best record while capturing eight AFC Championships and playing in 15 AFC title games.
