He was born in Tyler, Texas, and raised in Whitehouse, Texas. He attended Whitehouse High School, where he played baseball, basketball, and football. In football, he was a three-time All-District selection as a quarterback and led his team to the state semifinals as a senior.

He is the reigning NFL Most Valuable Player (MVP), and led the Chiefs to their first Super Bowl championship in 50 years. In 2018, he became the second African-American quarterback to win the league MVP.
Mahomes was drafted by the Chiefs in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft out of Texas Tech University. He began his professional career backing up Alex Smith before being named the starter in 2018 following Smith’s trade to Washington. In his first season as a starter, Mahomes threw for over 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns, becoming only the second player in NFL history to achieve those numbers in a single season. He also led the league with 10.2 yards per passing attempt and a 113 passer rating, and helped guide Kansas City to a 12–4 record and AFC West divisional title. In the playoffs, he threw for another 6 touchdown passes as the Chiefs defeated both the Indianapolis Colts and New England Patriots en route to their first Super Bowl appearance since 1970. There, Mahomes threw for over 300 yards and two touchdowns as Kansas City defeated the San Francisco 49ers 31–20 to win Super Bowl LIV. The following season, Mahomes signed a ten-year contract extension worth $503 million, making him both one of the highest-paid athletes ever and one of richest contracts ever given to an NFL player.
