Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is the NBA’s all-time leading scorer with 38,387 points. He played for 20 seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks and the Los Angeles Lakers, winning six NBA championships and 19 NBA All-Star Game selections. Abdul-Jabbar was also a two-time Olympic gold medalist and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1995.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was born Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor Jr. in New York City, the only child of Cora Lillian (née Mitchell), a department store price checker, and Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor Sr., a transit police officer and jazz musician. His father died when he was young, and he was raised by his mother and grandparents. Abdul-Jabbar’s muslim name at birth was Leroy Robert Paige; he changed it when he converted to Islam in 1968. He was raised in the Astoria section of Queens, New York City, attended Power Memorial Academy, a Catholic high school in Manhattan where he played on the basketball team under coach Jack Donahue from 1960 to 1963, winning 71 consecutive games while setting several new scoring records along the way.

As a child, Malone often had to work to help support his family. He started working in the cotton fields at age seven and later took jobs shucking oysters and working at a gas station. when he was a teenager, Malone began playing basketball at local parks and quickly developed into a star player.
