David Stern
From 1984 to 2014, the NBA was led by David Stern, who served as the league’s longest-tenured commissioner. In his three decades at the helm, Stern oversaw the league’s expansion from 23 to 30 teams; the creation of the WNBA; and the introduction of groundbreaking policies and programs, including drug testing, Salary Cap, approved equal sharing of Basketball Related Income (BRI) among owners and players, and improved safety measures for players. During Stern’s tenure, NBA revenues grew from $100 million to over $5 billion per year.

His background
David Stern was born in New York City on September 22, 1942. He is the son of William and Anna (Steinberg) Stern. His father was a partner in a New York law firm. His mother was a school teacher. He has one sister, Susan. Stern attended Rutgers University, where he received his B.A. degree in 1963 and his J.D. degree in 1966.
