At TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs (2015), then-champion Sheamus cashed-in his Money in the Bank contract on Roman Reigns during Reigns’ match against newly crowned champion Kevin Owens to win both titles and become unified WWE World Heavyweight Champion for a second time; however just four days later on Raw it was revealed that Reigns had leukemia and vacated both titles due to his illness. What is the WWE World Heavyweight Championship?

It is one of two world titles in the WWE, alongside the WWE Universal Championship that was created for the Raw brand as a result of the 2016 WWE draft. The current champion is Brock Lesnar, who is in his first reign.
The title was established under ECW in 1963 as the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF) World Heavyweight Championship following the promotion seceding from the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA). The belt was unified with the WCW World Heavyweight Championship on September 2, 2001, recognizing WCW’s lineage and retaining that title’s history while acknowledging WWF’s lineageback to 1963; this made then-champion “Stone Cold” Steve Austin also recognized as champion under both monikers. The championship has been defended under its original name, as well as its present name. It was renamed a second time upon WWE’s rebranding to “World Wrestling Entertainment” in 2002. In 2013, it was Unified with WWE’s Intercontinental and United States Championships so that all titles on the main roster were controlled by one champion at any given time rather than having multiple Undisputed Champions at once like other rival promotions have done throughout their existence; this resulted in then-World Heavyweight Champion Dolph Ziggler also becoming Intercontinental Champion upon his fourth reign with that title since its unification with not only this title but also becoming United States Champion simultaneously making him 3/4th of an Undisputed Champion due to three out of four main titles being controlled by one person at one time like other rival promotions have done throughout their existence including WCW itself which had an Undisputed Champion during its existence many times throughout its history though never simultaneously holding all 4 titles at once until Ziggler became Undisputed Champion due to holding three out of four titles thus becoming 3/4th of an Undisputed Champion and making him just like other former Undisputed Champions in other rival promotions though not recognized as such by WWE themselves but only by themselves and fans referring to him as such due to being 3/4th of an Undisputed Champion and having effectively won all 4 main titles at once along with John Cena who was simultaneously holding all 4 main titles at once around the same time. The title has been vacant three times: in 1992 after then-champion Ric Flair was stripped of the title for failing to defend it within 30 days (as per a storyline stipulation), in 2007 after Batista quit WWE while holding it (due to injuries), and between 2013 and 2014 due to no clear winner emerging from a match between then-champion Dolph Ziggler and Alberto Del Rio at TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs following outside interference from Jack Swagger and Antonio Cesaro on Ziggler’s behalf which resulted in both men being attacked by Big E Langston afterwards thus resulting in no winner being declared though both men continued attacking each other after Langston had left thus making it unclear who won or if there even was a winner.
