The team almost folded before it even played a game when the ownership group ran out of money to fund operations just two weeks before the 1994 NFL season was set to begin. A local ownership group led by businessman Wayne Weaver saved the team and its players agreed to take a pay cut to stay in Jacksonville. The team’s first game was played on September 3, 1995, a 10-3 loss to the Houston Oilers at Liberty Stadium.
