Who Is the NFL Rookie of the Year?

The NFL Rookie of the Year is an annual award given to the top first-year player in the National Football League.

Lamar Jackson

The National Football League’s (NFL) annual Rookie of the Year Award honors the outstanding performer among rookies in the NFL. The award winner is selected by a vote of NFL offensive and defensive coordinators. This year, the award goes to Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson.

Lamar Jackson was the 2016 Heisman Trophy winner, 2017 ACC Player of the Year, and 2017 ACC Offensive Player of the Year. He was selected by the Baltimore Ravens with the 32nd pick in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Jackson began his rookie season as the Ravens’ backup quarterback behind Joe Flacco, but took over as the starter in Week 11. In his first career start, he set a franchise record for most rushing yards by a quarterback in a game with 143 yards. He also became the first rookie quarterback in NFL history to throw for at least 250 yards and rush for at least 100 yards in a game. Jackson finished his rookie season with 1,201 passing yards, 697 rushing yards, and seven touchdowns.

Saquon Barkley

Saquon Barkley is an American football running back for the New York Giants of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Penn State for three years, where he was a two-time consensus All-American and was named the Associated Press Big Ten Conference running back of the year in 2016. Barkley was selected with the second overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft by the Giants.

In Barkley’s rookie season, he had 1,307 rushing yards, 728 receiving yards, and 11 total touchdowns. He was named the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and was selected for the Pro Bowl.

Barkley was born on February 7, 1997, in the Bronx, New York. He played running back and linebacker for his Bronx public high school football team. As a senior, he was named the 2012 Gatorade New York Football Player of the Year. Barkley then attended Penn State University, where he played for the Penn State Nittany Lions football team from 2015 to 2017. He was a consensus first-team All-American as a junior in 2017. That season, he also became Penn State’s seventh two-time first-team All-American and only the second player in program history to be named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year twice.

Kyler Murray

Kyler Murray was the first overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft. He was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals. He played college football at Oklahoma. In his only season as starter, he won the Heisman Trophy, becoming the second Oklahoma player to do so.

During his final year of college, Murray threw for 4,361 yards and 42 touchdowns. He also rushed for 1,001 yards and another 12 scores. In the process, he became the first player in FBS history to throw for over 4,000 yards and rush for over 1,000 yards in a single season.

Kyler Murray was born on August 7, 1997, in Bedford, Texas. He grew up in Allen, Texas, and played quarterback for Allen High School. In his senior year, he led the team to a perfect 16-0 record and a state championship. He was named the Gatorade Player of the Year and the USA Today High School Offensive Player of the Year.

Murray enrolled at the University of Oklahoma in 2015. He played for the Oklahoma Sooners from 2015 to 2018. As a freshman, he was named the Big 12 Conference Freshman of the Year. In his sophomore year, he was named a finalist for the Heisman Trophy. In his junior year, he won the Heisman Trophy and was named the Associated Press College Football Player of the Year.

Murray decided to forgo his senior year of eligibility and enter the 2019 NFL Draft. He was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals with the first overall pick. Murray became only the second player in NFL history to be drafted with both football and baseball eligibility remaining (the other is Bo Jackson).
