The National Hockey League (NHL) is a professional ice hockey league composed of 30 teams: 23 in the United States and 7 in Canada. From its inception in 1917 until 1967, it was known as the National Hockey Association (NHA). The NHL took the NHA’s place as one of the leagues that competed for the Stanley Cup, which was an interleague competition back then. After a few years of failed attempts to remove the NHL as the Stanley Cup’s chief competitors, the two agreed to merge, with the NHL becoming the de facto major league and the Stanley Cup being awarded to its playoff champion.
As part of the merger agreement, four teams were promised membership if they could prove financial stability: The Montreal Canadiens, Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers and Quebec Nordiques. The original six members were: Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers and Toronto Maple Leafs. These are also sometimes referred to as “The Classic Six”. As time went on, more teams were spawned from Original Six cities (Los Angeles Kings, Buffalo Sabres) or from merging or relocating other organizations (Minnesota North Stars became Dallas Stars).

The Boston Bruins are the oldest team in the National Hockey League, having been founded in 1924. The Bruins have won six Stanley Cups, the most recent being in 2011. The Bruins are also the only team in the NHL to have never missed the playoffs.
