Alongside the Boston Celtics, the Knicks are one of two original NBA teams still located in its original city.
The Knicks were successful during their early years and were constant playoff contenders under the leadership of future Hall of Fame head coach Joe Lapchick. Beginning in 1950, however, the Knicks began a long period of decline that was initially characterized by a series of poor trade decisions and unsuccessful draft picks. In 1962, the franchise posted their worst record in franchise history at 20–62; this was also their first season without a winning record since they went 23–59 during their inaugural campaign. Over a 15-year period from 1967 to 1982, they failed to win more than 30 games in a season; during this time Spanning from 1967 to 1982, they also compiled 13 seasons with more losses than wins which is an NBA worst over that span They posted only four winning seasons and never qualified for postseason play during this period until 1975..
Times finally began to change when Red Holzman was hired as head coach in 1968. The Knicks then drafted two future Hall of Famers: forward Dave DeBusschere in round eight out of Detroit Mercy, and center Willis Reed from Grambling State University with their territorial pick in round two. DeBusschere became an All-Star under Holzman’s tutelage whilst Reed overcame early injuries to lead them to their first ever NBA Finals appearance in 1970, where they faced Orlando Magic’s expansion cousin Los Angeles Lakers led by eventual Finals MVP Elgin Baylor and future basketball legend Jerry West. Although they lost that series 4–3 due to playing without Reed for most of it due to his serious thigh injury which caused him missing games 5 and 6, it showed promise for next year when healthy which was ultimately realized when Reed made his “Miracle” Game 7 return from his injury which electrified MSG and sparked them on for a 113–99 series-clinching win over Los Angeles which gave them their first ever NBA Championship and made Reed the first player since George Mikan 46 years previously in 1954 to win Finals MVP as a rookie. It was also special as it came against Los Angeles who had recently beaten them on their home court days prior despite being outscored 69–53 by Walt Frazier including 41 points from DeBusschere during game 6 but could not overcome injuries suffered earlier on down 3 key starters including Baylor himself who did not return after suffering a knee injury 3 minutes into game 5 despite scoring 19 points before going down as well as starting forwards Mel Counts (elbow) and Jim McMillian (back) both forced out before halftime after getting hurt earlier on..
