Jerry Rice, in full Jerry Lee Rice, (born October 13, 1962, Starkville, Mississippi, U.S.), American professional gridiron football player who is widely considered to be the greatest wide receiver in National Football League (NFL) history. He retired after 20 seasons with the San Francisco 49ers (1985–2000), Oakland Raiders (2001–04), and Seattle Seahawks (2004).
In his first season with the 49ers, Rice caught 51 passes for a club rookie record 1,283 yards and nine touchdowns as San Francisco reached Super Bowl XXIII, where it lost to the Cincinnati Bengals. The following year he appeared in all 16 games and again topped 1,000 receiving yards while helping the 49ers to their second consecutive Super Bowl appearance. Although they were defeated by the New York Giants in Super Bowl XXV, Rice had a great game, catching 11 passes for a game-record 215 yards. He was named Most Valuable Player of Super Bowl XXIII and selected for the Pro Bowl—the first of 10 consecutive appearances—following each of his first 12 seasons. A sprained left knee sidelined Rice for much of the 1997 season.
