Who is the shortest quarterback in the NFL? This is a question that many football fans have been wondering, and we have the answer.
Russell Wilson- Seattle Seahawks
Russell Wilson is an American football quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the University of Wisconsin during the 2011 season, in which he set the single-season FBS record for passing efficiency (191.8) and led the team to a Big Ten title and the 2012 Rose Bowl. He was selected by the Seahawks with the 12th pick in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft, becoming the highest drafted quarterback from North Carolina since 1983. In his rookie year, Wilson tied Peyton Manning’s record for most passing touchdowns by a rookie (26) and was named NFC Rookie of the Year. In 2013, he led the Seahawks to their first ever Super Bowl victory, defeating the Denver Broncos 43-8 in Super Bowl XLVIII.
Kyler Murray- Arizona Cardinals
At 5’10”, Kyler Murray is officially the shortest quarterback in the NFL. The Arizona Cardinals’ first-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft was also the first overall pick. Murray played college football at Oklahoma and won the Heisman Trophy in 2018.
Murray is not the only short quarterback in the NFL. There are a number of quarterbacks who are listed at 6’0” or 6’1”, including Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints, Baker Mayfield of the Cleveland Browns, and Russell Wilson of the Seattle Seahawks. All of these quarterbacks have had successful NFL careers.
Height can be an advantage for shorter quarterbacks because they can be more elusive and have a lower center of gravity, making it harder for defenders to tackle them. They can also throw over taller defenders who are trying to block their passes. Shorter quarterbacks often have to work harder to prove themselves because they are not considered ideal prototypes for the position.
Despite their less than ideal height, shorter quarterbacks have had a lot of success in the NFL. In addition to Murray, Brees, Mayfield, and Wilson, other successful short quarterbacks include Doug Flutie, Fran Tarkenton, Steve Young, and Sammy Baugh.
Baker Mayfield- Cleveland Browns
At just under 6 feet tall, Baker Mayfield is one of the shortest quarterbacks in the NFL. Despite his lack of height, Mayfield has had a very successful career thus far. He was drafted first overall by the Cleveland Browns in 2018, and he led the Browns to their first playoff appearance in 18 years in 2020. Mayfield has also been named the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and the AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year.
Drew Brees- New Orleans Saints
Drew Brees is the shortest quarterback in the NFL. He is listed at 6 feet tall, but many believe that he is closer to 5’11”. Even though he is not the tallest quarterback, he has still been extremely successful in his career. He was drafted by the San Diego Chargers in 2001 and has played for the New Orleans Saints since 2006. In his career, he has been selected to 12 Pro Bowls and has led the Saints to a Super Bowl victory.
Lamar Jackson- Baltimore Ravens
At 6’2”, Jackson is tied with New Orleans Saints QB Teddy Bridgewater as the shortest starting quarterback in the NFL. He’s also the lightest starting QB, weighing in at 200 pounds. Despite his lack of height and weight, Jackson has been one of the most productive quarterbacks in the league since taking over as the Ravens starter midway through the 2018 season. In his first full season as a starter in 2019, Jackson led the Ravens to a 14-2 record and was named the NFL MVP after throwing for 3, 127 yards and 36 touchdowns with just six interceptions. He also ran for 1,206 yards and seven touchdowns en route to being named the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year.
