Manute Bol

Manute Bol (born October 16, 1962) is a Sudanese-American retired basketball player who was once the tallest player in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He is believed to have been the tallest person to ever play in the NBA. Standing at 7 feet 7 inches (2.31 m),[1][2] he played the center position for several teams throughout his 10-year NBA career.

Bol was born and raised in Turalei, Sudan (now South Sudan). He did not start playing basketball until he was 19 years old, after being discovered by a Sudanese government official while IUPUI Jaguars men’s basketball coach Dale Brown was scouting players in Africa. After dominating from high school to college basketball in the United States, Bol was selected in the second round of the 1985 NBA draft by the Golden State Warriors. He became one of only three rookies in NBA history to average at least four blocks per game, and only one of two rookie centers to average double figures in rebounds per game that season.

Bol had a successful rookie season; he set an NBA rookie record for most blocks per game, and was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team honoree. He played sparingly over his next few seasons with the Warriors before being traded to Washington midway through his fourth season. With increased playing time, he became one of only three players ever to average five or more blocked shots for an entire season during his first two years with Washington, and again averaged double figures in rebounds per game during his final two seasons with them. In 1987–88, he set an NBA single-season record for most blocks per 48 minutes played (11), which still stands today.[3] Bol finished second behind only Mark Eaton that year for both total blocks and blocks per game despite playing 28 less games than Eaton and averaging almost 15 fewer minutes per contest; when extrapolated over 48 minutes however, both had similar rates: Eaton 10.4 bpg/48 min and Bol 11 bpg/48 min.[4] That same year he blocked 273 shots, which is still 9th on that single season list as of November 2016,[5] 18 seasons later; it remains a Wizards franchise record too.[6][7] Bol’s career quickly declined thereafter due to injuries and constant pain from acromegaly; he retired just before his 30th birthday after appearing in parts of just six games during his final two seasons combined.[

Conclusion

At 7’2″, Timberwolves center Karl-Anthony Towns is the tallest player in the NBA today.
