Who has held the WWE Championship in the past?
The WWE Championship is a world heavyweight championship created and promoted by the American professional wrestling promotion WWE on the SmackDown brand. It is one of two world titles for WWE’s main roster, alongside the Universal Championship that was created for the Raw brand as a result of the 2016 WWE draft. The current holder is AJ Styles, who is in his second reign.
The title was first introduced in 1963 as the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF) World Heavyweight Championship, it served as the promotion’s centerpiece until the 1991 breakup of the WWWF into the WWWF’s successor promotion, the World Bodybuilding Federation (WBF), and Jim Crockett Promotions, which acquired WCW in 1988. The title was then unified with WCW’s Championship at Vengeance in 2001 to become jointly promoted as WWF/E and WCW’s designation for their world heavyweight title until 2002 when it became exclusive to SmackDown after an initial draft split between WWF/E and Raw. As a result of the 2016 draft, it became exclusive to SmackDown once again; however, after Vince McMahon announced a new television deal with Fox Sports beginning in October 2019 that would see almost all WWE programming move to Fox branded networks including FS1, FS2 and Fox—with Smackdown moving back to Friday nights—the show would be simulcast on both USA Network and Fox beginning October 4.
In professional wrestling, a championship is a physical representation of an accomplishment. Unlikely other combative sports, wins and losses are predetermined by promoters ahead of time, giving champions an aura of credibility that has helped make professional wrestling into one of America’s favorite forms of entertainment.
