The title was first introduced in 1963 as the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF) World Heavyweight Championship, it served as the promotion’s centerpiece until the 1991 breakup of the WWWF into the WWWF’s successor promotion, the World Bodybuilding Federation (WBF), and Jim Crockett Promotions, which acquired WCW in 1988. As a result of the 2016 draft, it became exclusive to SmackDown once again; however, after Vince McMahon announced a new television deal with Fox Sports beginning in October 2019 that would see almost all WWE programming move to Fox branded networks including FS1, FS2 and Fox—with Smackdown moving back to Friday nights—the show would be simulcast on both USA Network and Fox beginning October 4.
