The WWE Championship is a world heavyweight championship created and promoted by the American professional wrestling promotion WWE, currently defended on their Raw brand. It is one of WWE’s original championships, dating back to 1963.Ranked as the most prestigious championship in WWE, the title has been held by some of the most prominent names in the company’s history, including Bruno Sammartino, Hulk Hogan, Bret Hart, Stone Cold Steve Austin and John Cena. The current champion is Drew McIntyre, who is in his first reign.

The inaugural holder of the title was Buddy Rogers, who won a tournament to crowned the first champion after WWE predecessor Capitol Wrestling Corporation seceded from the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA). The tournament was completed on June 30, 1963; however, due to various disputes within the NWA at that time over who was rightful winner of their world heavyweight championship—a championship that had been held by multiple wrestlers including Lou Thesz and Pat O’Connor—as well as several other issues such as different interpretations of championship lineage and multiple promoters claiming to represent the NWA’s world heavyweight championship—the title was not universally recognized as the world heavyweight championship until Rogers defeated Antonino Rocca in a match aired on January 24, 1964.

Since its inception in 1963, there have been 59 different official champions (not counting vacant spells), who have had a combined 73 official reigns (also not counting vacant spells). Although it has been featured many times on Raw (the flagship show of WWE’s Raw brand), it has also been featured on WWE’s secondary shows SmackDown (airing on FOX) and NXT (airing on USA Network).
