The title was established as the WWWF Heavyweight Championship on April 29, 1963, when Bruno Sammartino defeated Buddy Rogers to become the inaugural champion. It became known as the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF) Heavyweight Championship when Vincent J. McMahon’s World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF) seceded from the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) in 1963. The title was then renamed the WWF Heavyweight Championship in 1979 when the WWWF became known as World Wrestling Federation (WWF). The name was reverted back to World Heavyweight Championship upon WWE’s separation from WCW and acquisition of its assets in 2001; however, it became exclusive to SmackDown! after 2002 until December 15, 2013. In 2016, then-WWE Raw General Manager Mick Foley proposed renaming it back to “WWF Heavyweight Championship”, which Triple H ultimately vetoed due to fan backlash over retaining references to a defunct rival promotion. As SmackDown! was split from Raw into its own separate brand at WrestleMania 34 on April 8, 2018, a separateRaw-exclusive world championship – namely the Universal Championship – was created for that brand by unifying both the former world titles of that brand: Dean Ambrose’s WWE World Heavyweight Championship and Brock Lesnar’s WWE Universal Championship; this resulted in withdrawing recognition of Lesnar as champion and deactivatingofthe title until Ambrose won it 24 hours later.
