WWE World Championship history

The WWE World Championship is a professional wrestling championship in World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). It is the first world title of the company, having been established by the then-World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF) in 1963. The inaugural champion was Buddy Rogers, who won the title by defeating Antonino Rocca in the finals of a tournament. The title referred to the planet Earth, rather than a specific country or region, as it has been referred to in other professional wrestling promotions.

In 1979, the WWWF became the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), and split its roster into two separate promotions, with each promotion having its own world champion. The WWF Championship and the WWF Intercontinental Championship became the most prestigious titles of their respective promotions until 1993 when both titles were unified to create the WWF World Heavyweight Championship. In 2002, Vince McMahon downsized WWE’s operations nad renamed it to World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE).

As a result of WWE’s original expansion plans, their world titles were once again split up into two separate brands; Raw and SmackDown. This led to each brand having its own world championship: Raw with the WWE Undisputed Championship and SmackDown with the WWE Championship. The Undisputed Championship became exclusive to Raw while SmackDown created an interim championship known as the WWE World Heavyweight Championship which would eventually replace only theUndisputed title after it was unified with Raw’s Intercontinental Championship. In 2006 however, ECW was revived as its own third brand whereupon they reintroduced their own version of WWE’s original world title known as ECW World Heavyweight Championship. Later that same year, WWE discontinued using “World” in all of its championships in favor of “WWE” thereby renaming all three championships simply as: Undisputed WWE Championship onRaw; WWE Championship on SmackDown; and ECW
Championship on ECW; which would remain until 2010 whenECW ceased to exist as a brand and was replaced by NXT. In 2011 however, “WWE” was dropped from all three titles’ names, reverting them back to their original name:Undisputed WWE ChampionshIp on Raw;
WWE Champion on SmackDown(now excluding “World”); and ECW Champion on
ECwerevealed that there would be a New Breed Title Defense Elimination Chamber match at New Year’s Revolution 2006 for what was then called `the newly recreated ECW World Heavyweight championship’. However, due to John Cena winning both his brands’ Royal Rumbles that yearand Batista retaining his world heavyweight championship at New Year’s Revolution from Triple H ,the winner ofthe elimanation chamber match instead won an opportuniyto facethe reigning champion at Wrestlemania 22 forthe sole world heavyweight championship thereby unifying all three championships forthe first time into one singular title simply called `wwechampionship’.
