High school coaching
Hayes began his coaching career at his alma mater, Saint Xavier High School in Louisville, Kentucky, where he served as an assistant coach from 1999 to 2001. In 2002, he was named the head coach of the freshman team. In 2003, he led the freshman team to a 9–1 record and was named the Greater Catholic League Coach of the Year.
In 2004, Hayes was named the head varsity coach at Saint Xavier. In his first season as head coach, he led the Tigers to a 12–2 record and a trip to the state semifinals. The following year, his team went 13–1 and won the state championship. In 2006, he led Saint Xavier to a 12–2 record and another trip to the state semifinals. His overall record as head varsity head coach at Saint Xavier was 37–7 (.841).
