The Stanley Cup is awarded to the NHL champion
The Stanley Cup is a trophy awarded annually to the National Hockey League (NHL) championship team. It is the oldest professional sports trophy in North America, and it is one of the most recognizable symbols of professional ice hockey.
The Stanley Cup was first presented in 1893 to the Montreal Hockey Club (then known as the Amateur Athletic Association), winners of the first-ever NHL championship. The trophy was originally known as the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup, and it was donated by Governor General of Canada Lord Stanley of Preston. The original cup was retired in 1947, and a new trophy was introduced in its place.
The current Stanley Cup is made of sterling silver and consists of a base, a bowl, and a band. The names of all winning players, coaches, general managers, and club staff are engraved on the base of the trophy. The names of all winning teams are also inscribed on the bowl portion of the trophy.
The Stanley Cup is currently contested by 30 teams: 23 from the United States and 7 from Canada. Of those 30 teams, 16 make it to the playoffs each year. The playoffs are a best-of-seven tournament, and the winner of each series advances to the next round until there are only two teams remaining. These two teams then compete in the Stanley Cup Final to determine who will be crowned champion for that year.
The Stanley Cup is awarded to the team with the best record in the NHL
The Stanley Cup is the championship trophy of the National Hockey League (NHL). It is a Stanley Cup ring with the words “Stanley Cup” inscribed on it. The Stanley Cup was first presented to the NHL champion in 1893 and is named after Lord Stanley of Preston, the Governor General of Canada who donated it as an award to Canada’s top-ranking amateur hockey club. The Stanley Cup is 28 inches (71 cm) high and 35 inches (89 cm) in circumference at its widest point. It weighs 34 pounds (15 kg) and has a capacity of 14 ounces (400 ml).
The Winnipeg Jets are the current holders of the Stanley Cup, having won it in 2020. They are also the youngest team in the NHL, with an average age of 26.3 years old.
