WWE Championship
The WWE Championship is a professional wrestling championship in WWE, currently on the SmackDown brand. It is one of WWE’s world championships, and is the second oldest in existence behind the WWE Universal Championship that was introduced in 2016. The title was created by Vince McMahon in 1963 to be the world heavyweight championship of the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF). It underwent a number of name changes until it settled on its current name in 1998.
A title match for the WWE Championship is billed as the main event of Raw and SmackDown. From its inception until 2001, it was competed for only by male wrestlers; with the introduction of the WWE Women’s Championship, a similar women’s title was also established. In August 2016, then-WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins suffered a knee injury that forced him to vacate the title. As a result, then-WWE Commissioner Stephanie McMahon decreed that both Raw and SmackDown would each have their own exclusive world championship; with Raw receiving the Universal Championship, and SmackDown receiving a brand-new WWE Championship following that brand’s split from Raw during that year’s draft lottery.
The first ever champions were Buddy Rogers (the inaugural champion) and Bruno Sammartino (recognized as champion by WWWF), who won a tournament to become the inaugural WWF World Heavyweight Champions respectively.

In 1964, Ivan Koloff defeated Rogers to win the title in Madison Square Garden, but Rogers was immediately awarded a rematch due to what was referred to as “slow count” by the referee. The second occasion occurred on January 18, 1965 when Bruno Sammartino defeated then-champion Hank Aaron in Detroit during a live match that aired on ABC’s Wide World of Sports. Sammartino successfully defended his title against Aaron in a rematch that took place two weeks later on February 1.
