It is one of WWE’s original world championships, having been introduced under the WWF banner in 1963. The current champion is Drew McIntyre, who is in his second reign.
The title was originally known as the WWF World Heavyweight Championship and the WWWF World Heavyweight Championship before WWE adopted its current name in 2002. When the WWWF was renamed to World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in 1979, it began referring to its heavyweight title as the WWF Heavyweight Championship. However, after Vince McMahon bought the company from his father and changed its name to World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) in 2002, it reintroduced the world heavyweight championship as the WWE Undisputed Championship before unifying it with the WCW Championship at Vengeance in December 2001.
In August 2002, over a year after Vince McMahon had bought ECW and WCW from Turner Broadcasting System, he removed all references to “ECW” from WWE’s website and flagship television program, Raw Is War; however, he kept “WCW” in both until November 18 of that year when he renamed them to RAW and SmackDown!, respectively. In May of that same year, McMahon announced that the Undisputed Championship would thereafter be referred to as simply “the World Heavyweight Championship”.
