Who Is the WWE Tag Team Champion?

The WWE Tag Team Championship is a professional wrestling championship in WWE.

The WWE Tag Team Championship is a professional wrestling championship in WWE. It is contested for by tag teams of two wrestlers. As of May 26, 2019, The Hardy Boyz (Matt Hardy and Jeff Hardy) are the current champions, in their first reign as a team.

The title was established as the WWE World Tag Team Championship on October 20, 2002, as a part of WWE’s brand extension. The inaugural champions were Chris Jericho and The Rock. The title was originally intended to be exclusive to the SmackDown! brand, but was eventually unified with the World Tag Team Championship on August 16, 2010, making it available to wrestlers on both the Raw and SmackDown brands.

The titles were later split again on July 19, 2016 when Raw introduced the Raw Tag Team Championship for their tag teams while SmackDown kept the WWE Tag Team Championship for their brand’s tag teams; however, both titles were once again unified at WrestleMania 33 on April 2, 2017 when then-SmackDown General Manager Kurt Angle announced that at that night’s main event, whoever won a match between Raw’s challengers The Usos (Jey Uso and Jimmy Uso) and SmackDown’s champions Bray Wyatt and Randy Orton would become the sole holders of the WWE Tag Team Championship.

The current champions are The Usos, who are in their second reign as a team.

The title was established as the WWE Tag Team Championship on October 20, 2002, a title that was created and promoted by WWE’s then-developmental territory Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW). It served as the primary tag team championship of OVW until 2007, when WWE reassigned OVW to Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW). In 2008, the championship was brought back to OVW when it became WWE’s third developmental territory, NXT. FCW became WWE’s second developmental territory in 2012 and ceased operating in favor of NXT that same year. As a result of the 2016 draft, the Tag Team Championship became exclusive to SmackDown and Raw while NXT gained its own tag team titles: the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic (for male teams) and Women’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic (for female teams).

The inaugural champions were Rated-RKO (Edge and Randy Orton), who won a tournament at No Mercy on October 20, 2002 to become the first ever champions. The team held onto the titles until January 7, 2007 when they were defeated by The Hardy Boyz (Jeff Hardy and Matt Hardy). Overall there have been 71 different championship teams and 74 individual champions.

The championship was created in 1971 as the WWE World Tag Team Championship, and it has been known by several names since its inception.

Miz and Bourne went on to win the match, becoming the new WWE Tag Team Champions. Miz and Morrison officially became a team in November of 2019, and they have held the title ever since.
