Their Key Players
The Toronto Raptors are a Canadian professional basketball team based in Toronto, Ontario. The Raptors compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member club of the league’s Eastern Conference Atlantic Division. They were established in 1995 as part of the NBA’s expansion into Canada.
The Raptors play their home games at the Scotiabank Arena, which they share with the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League (NHL). The team was founded by John Bitove and Alan Slaight. Calling themselves the “Barney’s”, Bitove and Slaight acquired their own NBA franchise for Toronto, which was originally awarded to them on October 4, 1993, becoming only the second NBA team based outside of the United States (the other being Vancouver’s Grizzlies, who would relocate to Memphis three years later). An expansion fee of $125 million was paid to join the league. The team originally hoped to be ready for the 1995–96 season, but despite all of their planning, construction delays on their new home arena at SkyDome dragged on throughout 1995 and 1996; as a result, it was not until early 1997 that they finally unveiled their new image and logos, and took up residence in their new home near downtown Toronto (where they would remain until mid-1999), on January 1st. They are nicknamed “the Raptors”, after a prehistoric reptile class that includes velociraptors.
One key player for them is Pascal Siakam who plays Power forward/Center. He was born on February 4, 1994, in Douala, Cameroon and he is currently 26 years old. Standing at 6 ft 9 in (2.06 m), he plays mostly at the power forward position but has also played center throughout his career.
Siakam was discovered by former Texas A&M–Corpus Christi head coach Willis Wilson while he played basketball at a school in Douala; Wilson helped him obtain a student visa so he could attend Broward Community College in Coconut Creek, Florida during the 2011–12 season. Siakam then transferred to New Mexico State University where he played basketball for two seasons with the New Mexico State Aggies men’s basketball team. As a junior in 2014–15 he averaged 20 points and 11 rebounds per game while shooting 61 percent from the field en route to being named Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year and leading New Mexico State to a share of its first regular season conference championship since 2002–03.[3][4] Following his collegiate career Siakam was not selected in any mock drafts for either 2015 or 2016 but ultimately went 27th overall to Toronto during draft night.[5]
He has helped lead this team to having one of best records this season only behind Milwaukee Bucks .
