2017-2018 Season
The 2017-2018 season was Rajon Rondo’s eleventh in the NBA, and his first with the New Orleans Pelicans. It was also his best statistical season of his career. Rondo averaged career highs in points per game (11.7), assists per game (8.2), and steals per game (2.3), while also adding 6.7 rebounds per game. He played in all 82 games for the Pelicans, starting in 81 of them. Rondo’s Pelican teammates were both impressed and entertained by his performance on the court;DeMarcus Cousins called him a “savage” and a “dog”, while Jrue Holiday likened playing with him to being in “audibles all day”.
Rondo’s strong play helped the Pelicans earn the 6th seed in the Western Conference playoffs. In the first round of the playoffs, they faced off against the 3rd-seeded Portland Trail Blazers. The series went to seven games, with Rondo averaging 11 points, 10 assists, and 7 rebounds per game. The Pelicans ultimately lost the series, but Rondo’s triple double in Game 5 (21 points, 12 assists, 10 rebounds) was instrumental in keeping them alive.
For his strong play throughout the season, Rondo was named to the All-Defensive Second Team and finished 6th in voting for Defensive Player of the Year. He also led the league in triple doubles, with eight total.
